Title: stupid question. is there a way to remove fuel injection and go to a carberator?
Post by: 92BMW318is on August 15, 2012, 08:33:30 AM
Want to do this on my 92 318is. Is there a kit or a conversion to remove injection and put on carbs?

sure you could if you do something custom and re-engineer the DME software lol. Would be a BIG job with no clear benefits

Alright on to the second question, is it possible to run let's say natural gas into the intake. Shut off the gasoline pump and have the engine just run on natural gas.  Without engine failure do to injecters not pumping gasoline.

Anything is POSSIBLE. I'd say that the real question here centers on feasibility. There obviously aren't any kits for the M42 to do this, so it would be all custom.

The easiest way to cut gasoline injection is to have some sort of interposer between the ECU and injector harness that prevents the ECU from grounding them. The pump can still run, and no fuel will be injected. Cutting the pump is undesirable since there is a fair amount of residual pressure in the system and you'll still have gasoline injected for some seconds.

You could probably machine the intake manifold to add in some natural gas injectors/valves. How you would manage the mixture is the real challenge. You may as well ditch the Motronic and go with a Megasquirt setup. That will give you the flexibility to run two sets of injectors and probably switch between them.

I think I might just, have a insanely great idea. If a gasolineless conversion is "feasible".

Were there any front wheel drive 3 series cars

Sort of. The 325iX. You might be able to rig it up to eliminate the rear wheel drive. I don't know what you are cooking up, but I think I like it.

Are you talking something along the lines of an LPG conversion?

It's all basic theory right now.  What I want to do might be semi revolutionary.  Once I get all the necessary items to perform a bench test, I will tell you guys what it is I'm trying to do. I don't want any trolls, stealing my idea. It might take me a while to get all the items as some are expensive. Maybe a week at tops.

I would hazard a guess that you are trying to create an E30 with world record fuel economy. Front wheel drive cars are generally better because there is less rotating mass between the engine and wheels sucking up kinetic energy, so if you were to take a 325iX and remove darn near everything that transmits power to the rear wheels, you could possibly see some gains. Otherwise, a RWD E30 with a really light flywheel would also help. Contrary to popular belief, the "losses" in efficiency in RWD cars are not from friction, but rather parasitic leeching of energy into rotating more components rather than forward kinetic energy.

He is going to try and run the car off fecal bacteria is my guess :)

LPG conversions for the m42 is prevalent here in Germany. So it's doable.

I looked into this a while back when i was researching for my itb project..
Get webber dcoe side mount carbs 40 or 42mm
Replace your fuel pump to a low pressure pump

Now for the ignition timing 2 ways...
1. Buy a msd ignition timing kit for the distributorless set up
Or
2. Maybe get the software from bmw connect to adjust the timing and disable the FI features.

I found it easier and cheaper to keep it injection

Hope that helped

should do a pushrod conversion while you are at it
