Title: My M42 head is cracked

Yea a nice crack into the coolant line,

I can get a pre ´94 M42 318is E36 head, will it work ??

Any diffrences in specs?
like the cams and or valve sizes?

Looks like I might be swapping heads too with possibly a m42 from E36.

Anyone know if the timing components are the same? Anything else I should look out for or get?

I found that the valves are the same , but cams are not,
how they are not I can´t find an answer too

realoem doesn't have anything??

i heard that its simply swap and play...there are no gains to be had with the e36 head though..

Head is on, we used my cams as they where marked from the installation before,

Everything is back together and I´m going to try and dump the engine in the car today,

I put the cams back where they where before, might be a degree off, but thats ok,

on some the valve stem diameter is smaller

nope. Ive got 6mm stems since i got another head after mine cracked. then when the guides broke and the chain jumped and one broke off. I dunno if its worth it. ive got lightweiht lifters, lightweight flywheel, m44 rods, but the crank is heavier so it doesnt really matter, im still scared those m44 rods are going to let me down

Holy run on sentence batman! I think you meant to use periods instead. :p

Wait, so you pulled the entire motor just to replace the cylinder head?

If you pulled the entire motor without the tranny, I wish you luck in getting it back in. Some get lucky, some don't. Ask me how I know. :rolleyes:

I've done it this way a few times. Trick is to use a clutch aligning tool with f/w and cltuch loose, hook engine to G/B with f/w still loose, carefully unhook and tighten then  put on. never had too much trouble this way.

I'm a little unclear on your method. First of all, you cannot tighten the flywheel after the clutch and pressure plate is already on. Did you mean to have the pressure plate loose so the clutch can move around when you align the shaft through the clutch disc? Also, I don't understand why you have to if you never touched the clutch to begin with, since they should be in good alignment when you separated the motor from the tranny?

sorry yeah, was in work earlier and not really thinking too hard about my reply. seems you understood though.

every time i can remember taking a bmw engine out of a car i've removed the clutch - every time i can remember i've changed the rear crank seal and checked clutch etc.

If the clutch is untouched and in good alignment, why can't you get the engine onto the trans? I've never had this prob?

I put studs in the back of the block so they stick out like pins to start the trans/motor back on.
