Okay, I posted this on the E30 bimmerforums, but now that we are official, I'll say it again.
I think the light weight flywheel with the Conforti chip is one of the best mods you can do. The car feels totally different and gets up there very quickly. I didn't have a chance to autox or track day my car yet, but I will on April 1 & 2. I'll let you guys know how it went, and what type of cars in seen in my rearview mirror! :D .....okay, someone needs to work on the smilies! :)
BTW - I'm Thrlls on the bimmerforums.

have you done the 325i swap? I think I will do that since the alum m42 flywheel is insane $ not to mention swaping to to the 325i flywheel it would give you tons more options for clutches. :2cents:

bmp has a lightened flywheel for our cars for like $450 which isn't too much compared to the other companies offering them for close to $800!!

The M20 conversion, while a bit of a pain, is ell worth it. I have done it on both 318iS's now. I WAS going to use an Al M20 unit, but I got a chance at a used stocker for $60...yeah I got ALL the parts for under the cost of the Al flywheel. Considering how much rougher the car idles going from the 29lb M42 unit to the 19lb M20 unit, I would be reluctant to go to an Al one. It sure does revv faster in 1st & 2nd gear! It also takes a day to get used to having to gas it more from stops though. Definitely stalled it once when i first tried to get going!

I used the stock M20 flywheel and had it machined to remove about 8lbs from it. I love the feel and enjoy the additional Hp's that were released. I think second to the MAF conversion in bang for buck

I purchased the BMP fw and OEM clutch. I didn't think I would need a high performance clutch with my M42 putting out maybe 150 hp. The acceleration is just awesome, and my gas mileage seems to have improved also. It helps in the stop and go traffic here on Oahu, hope it does well at autox.

btw how much did you guys get the m20 flywheel for?

I have no clue how much a used 325is flywheel is worth but a friend offered me his for $25 since he bought an alumin one. I'm assuming thats a great deal right?

My engine is actually from the e36 318ti plonked into the engien bay replacing the M40 8v SOHC engine
So I'm still using the M40 flywheel and gearbox. I have lightened the flywheel and it weighed 7.8kg now.. about 16.5lbs.

woah more details...was that m42 easy to swap in? im thinking about doing this because that engine is much much more refined, and it has a little bit more power too.

I did the M40 flywheel conversion too.
All you need is the M40 flywheel, the M40's shorter flywheel bolts, and a M40 clutch and pressure plate... it all just bolts in.
Personally I didn't notice a huge difference with a stock M40 flywheel although it was about 2kg lighter than the M40 parts. Probably best to remove another 2kg or so from the stock M40 flywheel if you are looking for a big change.

Can you guys post what your idle and drivability are like with your specific set up. I was thinking of the m20 on a daily driver.

I paid a whopping $60 for mine used. Compared to $450+ prettymuch anything is a steal.

currently i have been thinking of the m40 fly + clutch swap.
but i have also been trying to invesitgate other options. one that i keep seeing is the one that the 318Ti guys use. it incorporates a lightweight e36 clutch and the e34 M5 clutch pack.
does anyone know if this can be done on our e30s, or do the Ti's use a different box? I have a feeling that they do, but it is worth double checking.

I've paid 18$ for a 323i flywheel and starter pinion. :D
