I've sent private messages that don't show up in my outbox.  Is this because of lack of posts, possibly?

Sometimes the system is finicky. Try PMing Desktop Dave or post a thread in the general section. The spam filter might be screwing with you.

I don't think the site supports an outbox.  My messages are all stored inline, more or less just like regular posts are.  I'm careful never to delete the quoted text in the box when I respond to PMs.
