Title: Electric fan installed
Post by: ic455 on May 08, 2012, 11:59:23 PM
So I realized that my fan clutch was no good (stop it with a rolled up magazine while engine running at high temp) and since my fan shroud is missing I opted to just install a 16" Torqflo unit from work.
The install went quite well, aside from me not wiring a relay in at first and having the fan backfeed the electrical system if I turned ignition off with fan running, which I remedied by wiring in a Bosch relay I had laying around.
I used the cheapo Torqflo fan controller that requires the temp probe be installed INSIDE the upper rad hose....it actually does work and doesn't leak. (yay)  So now when my (stock) temp gauge hits a hair past the middle tic mark the fan comes on and runs until the needle is between 1/4 and 1/2.
Before this install it would just keep heading for critical mass in traffic, LOL, now everything is copacetic.  Still need to fine-tune the mounting of the fan, I'm not particularly pleased with the system supplied with the fan.
See the before and after shots:

Here's the controller mounted on driver's fenderwell:(http://www.m42club.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=202&pictureid=1262)
And here's the whole picture, note the extra bit of wire loom looped below the controller in this pic, it goes to the relay that I thought I didn't need:
