Title: [Group Buy. M47 crankshaft] Check interest
Post by: ToniBmwPortugal on April 21, 2012, 06:24:38 AM
Hi there to all! :D
I wanna now if there is interest to make a group buy for the us guys for the M47 crankshaft.
The price is still a bit preliminary but somewere around 300 dol plus postage.
Is there an interest at all?

Greetz

That's an incredible deal!  I hope you get some takers, as a new crank is roughly $800USD last time I heard, if you can even still get them.  Will they be properly machined for the M42?

What do you think lead time or postage would be, roughly?  Are we talking $300USD or do you want to list it in Euros?

Hi there!
Pay attention that the crankshafts are used so they are not new (on the BMW its like a billion dollares new...).

No they will not be machined for the M42 but i can talk to some machinists to give me a price for that (Curiosity: whats the price there for a machinist to adapt a M47 crank to the M42? Just to give me an example to compare it to here)

We can talk in $USD i guess. As for the postage i will have to see whats the best... What to you guys think? I checked BMW Fans site and the M47 crank is rougly 37lb.

I don't know if it's relevant to this conversation(), but I looked up the US Postal Service rate for sending a 40lb package measuring 32"X15"X10" by priority and it was ~$123.

I'm sure there will be plenty of interest in your proposal, but I'm not certain if there's many of us sitting here simply waiting for an M47 crank to pop up so we can stroke our motor.

That being said...put my name on the list.:D

Where in Portugal do you live?

Sure it's relevant mate :) was this(https://www.usps.com/) the site were you calculated the shipping cost? I can't calculate the price there because its only from the USA to Portugal and not from Portugal to USA ... Am i right? But hey 123$ its a damn good price.

Well i guess the title of the thread is misleading. I can ship M47 cranks individually, but i guess a group buy would lower the cost

Anyway we are here to discuss that.

I live in Povoa de Varzim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%B3voa_de_Varzim) which is a city that belongs to the district of Porto, which is one of the big regions of Portugal

Yup, that's the site. Sometimes I've been surprised by how inexpensive some things are to ship via DHL or a carrier similar to that.

We need a standard recipe for building a stroked M42. :)

We spent quite a few long weekends or an occasional week in Portugal when we were stationed in Spain. You live in a beautiful part of the country.

Have you manage to simulate the ship price via DHL or other?

On the net there is a lot of information on the stroked M42, specialy in this forum (which is great by the way!). In short term i'm building my very own 2.1 M42 to kick some high mileage 2.0 S14 asses :D

Oh thank you for not considered that Portugal is a city of Spain hehe indeed its a beautiful country (but there is a bit of a problem here: we pay something like 9dollars a gallon for gasoline )! My aunt lived for many years in Florida so someday maybe i'm going to take a trip to the USA, at least i want :)

I can't get the DHL site to work for me, but UPS charges were (gulp) ~$440-$530.

I have a theory called, "The Tree Fort Syndrome" in which a group of little neighborhood boys decide to build a tree fort together. There is lots of excitement and chatter as they gather materials and plan for construction, but after a few days interest is lost. In the end there is no tree fort and one unfortunate father is left to pull nails out of a tree trunk in his back yard, clean up scraps of lumber and search for tools left strewn about and rusting in the morning dew. Meanwhile, the boys gather at another father's house and excitedly plan to build a go-kart...

I don't mean to sound discouraging, but there are lots of M42 stroker "tree fort" stories on the internet. By "recipe" what I really meant was a stoker build thread that was actually completed and running without an inordinate amount of expense and exotic fuel/engine management. :)

I just used UPS to estimate the shipping prices (i used Florida as destination) and well its a lot not 440-530$ but it gave me o minimum of ~~ 323$ which is a lot... With this the estimated final price for the crank its around 600-700$ so i guess its a little to difficult to sell that into the USA

I totally understand what you mean and I agree with that. But the gizmo's thread (which you certainly know) in the first fase of the build it was fairly simple before the itb's and with a compression of 11:1 if i remember.
So thats a good starting point.

I profess my ignorance and admit I don't know gizmo.

For shipping, make friends with someone in the US military that is stationed somewhere around there. I have bought TONS of stuff off of US guys in the EU. They get domestic USPS shipping rates from their bases, which is probably why a lot of them are spending weekends pulling parts at wreckers & selling them on the forums!

As for the "magic recipe" I would base it on Metric Mechanic's work. If you skip some of their reliability & head improvements, you can probably get a decent stroker for a fraction of the cost.

I'd be really keen for a m47 crank, depending on the shipping price to Sydney, Australia.

I'm sure that can be arranged but i'm afraid its gonna cost more the shipping than the crank itself...

Just throwing it out there that I too am interested (currently sitting on the money, will only spend it on the crank or pistons if I find a good deal on them).  Working on getting one from another source at the moment. If one from Portugal comes in around the same price before/if this one comes through, count me in for the group buy.

The crankshaft I found ended up being from an m47n engine.  Any chance of this thread being brought back to life?

Seems like it's dead, but you never know.  Made me wonder if an M47N crank would fit an M44?

I'm having a hard time finding the information I saw last year before I put this project on hold.  I think the m47n has a completely different oil pump setup and much shorter crank snout.  I haven't seen any builds able to use the m47n crank yet, but I could be wrong.

Anybody have any other leads on a crank?  The dealership can get me one, but I don't like their price of $1200.  Plus a $100 core charge since I don't have an m47 crank to return.  Plus tax.

Hi there!

I just wanted to say that the first crank is sold and delivered to the user E30noob and everything went allright.

If someone has interest on an M47 88mm crank just talk with me. Here are some photos of the process:
