I guess this makes it official, no more M42.  I suppose you'll take my M42 card away?

I <3 e30...doesn't have to have an M42 in my book.  Pick yer poison!

The car looks good!  Sounds like she's a bit cold-blooded too.  :D

One real issue:  Cost.  Not only is the motor more expensive, but the ECU we have can't control the fully variable dual-vanos.  Replacing both is beyond our means at this time.

I've been selling stuff for a few weeks.  I still have two short blocks left... one is the stroker block with the turbo pistons and all the accessories (1.95L).  All it needs is a head.  The other is a lightened crank with custom rods in a block.

The lightened is $500, the complete bottom end and pistons and rods with the M47 crank is $1,500.

Check the For Sale section.

But the engine itself is much better than Europe version S50. Two oil pump, high torque and so on. Stock is quite good for racing. I saw that there is some guys which can remove EWS and other unnecessary stuff from ECU and you can use stock ECU. You will have some limitations but anyway it will be better than stock S50 with custom mapping. If you are going to modify engine and install custom camshafts you can block VANOS so your ECU will fit S54. The only thing which is stopping me from switching to S54 is that in that case I would have to go to class above 3000 and it means 911, MLE and other fast cars in that class... ;)

I didnt see the video but is it a S50b30 or b32?

The S54 is a nice motor but as mentioned he would need a new ECU to run it. Im assuming its a S50b30 with the single vanos which is much easier to control. Sure you can lock the Vanos to make things simple, but then you give up a lot of torque potential.

Graphs on engines with vanos deactivated are quite different than ones where it is still functioning. Its smart to keep it working even if the engine spends most of its time in the upper end. Some corners still benefit from a healthy midrange :)

It looks like US M3 engine and its quite different from EU M3 engine. You can say it is M52 engine with some mods.

With VANOS it is better but I am not sure about situation if you will use wide phase cams. In some series it is banned by regulations.

sorry to hear about your loss! I have done a similar thing. Spent the last 12 months working out the bugs of an SR20 swap. Has been very painful but I'm on track to a winner now.

Changing because want to race a different class / series or as mentioned budget?
