Title: e-30 not happy..unless..

its true, she's an attention whore and is not happy unless I'm working on her.
  after several months of happy co-existence, she decided she needs a new heater core, or at least a new o-ring in the old one.  I have not looked yet..for anyone who has done this in situ, as they say,  does the system need to be drained or can you turn the heater valve off and just contain what comes out of the heater core ?  or maybe I should do what that volvo dude did and just install a wood burning stove in place of my passenger seat:eek:

I usually drain the system disconnect the heater core hoses and blow some air through it to purge as much water as I can. I hate getting coolant on anything! Good luck.

I did one last week.  Basically I drained the radiator, then taped a large garbage bag under pedals and up against where the core is to for a drip pan.  I used a an old towel to soak up the coolant that spilled out.

I don't think you are going to be able to just close the heater valve.
