that's wrong.
M44 has different pinout, it uses M5.2 Bosch DME... don't use those diagrams for m44 otherwise you could fry something ;)

here is etm for e36, check for the correct one...

Hi all, My first time on this forum. I have a 1996 Beemer, e36, M42 - 316i, with 1.8 motor, automatic. Here is sunny South Africa, if its not bolted down, then it grows legs, so My ECU was kindly hacked out my beemer. I'm desperately looking for the pin out color codes for all the wires that link to the ECU clamp. My unit is a Bosch M1.7.  I have the diagram that tells you what pin links to what sensor or part - but the wire colors are not mentioned.
I would so appreciate it if someone had this handy, or if you have the same ECU to post a few pics of the harness clamp showing the three rows of pins wire colours? Im at my wits end here as googling for hours has resulted in my last hair been pulled out.

Hi All,

Ok, I am now aware of what pin on my DME goes to what sensor, coil etc, but where can I get a color codes for each wire, as I dont want to have to check every wire color going to what component as that will entail stripping the entire harness, hauling off parts to check wires etc..

Does anyone have a pic of thier wiring loom plug to the DME for 316i or 318i (apparently the the same) 1.8 motor, automatic, that shows all the colors of all three rows of the loom connector for me? Pleeze guys? Bosch Motronic M1.7

I have nursed this baby of mine back from the dump just about, if I can get a ecu/ DME linked up correctly - she will be hundreds? Im not giving up on this car.. been 8 months now and 90% sorted out.. :-\

It is/was the images for the E30/E36 from the E36 Bentley manual. They are the same pinouts minus the DSIA valve and possibly other features the E30 M42 did not have.

Did you swap in the M42 engine and the complete engine wire harness?

You can refer to this wiring manual, section 1210.9 (specifically 1210.9-02) to figure out which plug goes to which coil.
