Hey guys I've been working on putting a new Head Gasket on my M42. I wanted to update the tensioner since I noticed alot of positive comments on the M44 tensioner compared to the M42. I was installing the tensioner(M44) first I test fit and made sure it was all good, I forgot to oil it a bit so I took it off. When the Tensioner was out right after out of nowhere the top part of the tensioner just popped off.. Does anyone now how I can get it reassembled? or am I going to need to buy a new one?

I have all the pieces, just need to figure out what is caused it to pop off like that and a way to put it back together, thanks.

I used a big set of slip-joint (channel lock) pliers to squeeze my M42 one back together.  Maybe a bench vice?  There should be a snap ring on the inner section that presses back in and snaps back into the original position.

I see I had a feeling that was the way to get it back into place just wanted to make sure before hand. I think there is actually a picture in the service manual that shows a m42 tensioner being pressed. Thanks

IIRC the M42 tensioner has to click twice.  Not 100% sure of the M44 unit.  

There's a snap ring that locks it in extended position, and a second ring on the nose of the hydraulic cylinder that locks it in "transport position."  If it's installed with only one ring locked it'll jam in extended position and the chain won't be tensioned.
