ive seen some cars here with the AFM sideways..... is there a benefit to that or is it just to make room will it mess up throttle response, idle, etc

No difference from what I've seen.  The door is spring-loaded, can't see gravity being much of a factor in throttle response.  I'll bet it's just for packaging.

What Dave said. There isn't any way for that to be a benefit besides packaging.

well i turned sideways this past weekend to find a place for my oil catch can and during the process it gave me somewhat of a rough idle so i put it back in its original place and then the rough idle was gone.....
