I had the parts for the 325i flywheel mod pretty much sourced used for about $250.00 & ready to buy. That is until I helped my friend change the transmission on his Miata. The 318is dual mass flywheel is staying right where it is!!!
We worked, Saturday 11 hour & Sunday 10 hours, to change his transmission. My buddy & I are not young nor rookies. The car was jacked up on 4 jack stands with plenty of room under it, good tools, shaded carport, refreshments etc.. We had 2 manuals & they were useless. We had to remove the following…complete exhaust (it had aftermarket header), drive shaft, trans mission to differential support, chassis aftermarket cross brace ( we had to remove the seats & carpet to do this part), console, shifter linkage, starter, radiator hoses, engine bottom pan, right front wheel, assorted brackets holding brake lines, engine bay cross brace...
The transmission would not come out. It was caught on the header & some brake lines on the upper passenger side that we could not see. The header would not come out...so we had to push the trans back into place to get it out.
Installing the new trans was better. I would not slide in all the way...until we bent the same brake lines out of the way, rope tied the rear of the trans "up" through the shifter hole & jacked up the motor front.
He got a mashed finger & I got a mild bump on my head. Nothing was broken & everything is back together. He has to jack the car up on a lift later & check out the tangled brake line issues.

Well don't let the Miata get you down. The M42 is much easier and the FW upgrade is so well worth the effort. I just pulled a motor, trans, exhaust, driveshaft, harness, and radiator along with all the other little things that go along with all of them in under 5 hours all by myself. You only need to pull the exhaust, driveshaft, trans and clutch to get to your flywheel!! I promise you there is hope and you're really missing out in not doing the FW. Besides the chip, it's the single most bang for your buck to wake the car up!! Go for it!!:D I'm rooting for you!!
Cheers,
~Ralph

I could easily swap it in one day alone... but I've done it 4-5 times.
