Title: do it yourself paint
Post by: 318is1506 on September 28, 2011, 08:50:46 PM
ok so the guy i bought my car from thought it would be cool to rice by sanding  the hood down and flat blacking it , which is driving me nuts! so i have been trying to find a good way to get it painted on a budget till i can paint the whole car. So i know this is a honda in the link but this guy did an awsome job, just thought i would share with everyone.    http://6thgearadvertising.com/civic/2006/09/how-to-spray-paint-on-budget.html

Prepping is everything. you could make Crayola look good if you took your time. the problem with most rattle can jobs is they fade quickly.

you should be able to get the correct auto paint custom mixed in a spray can from the local auto parts store for $20 or less.
not judging you, but from my own experience "only need it for a year," tends to take about 4 years...

What about a roller job (http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/body/hrdp_0707_1962_ford_falcon_budget_paint_job/)?  Thinned A tin of rustoleum, a gallon of mineral spirits (low odor hopefully), pro foam rollers, lots of sanding between coats.  Here's the original article (http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1) IIRC.

Ben's right...enamel doesn't last very long.  But for $100 the results aren't too bad.  The Charger in the second link is pretty spectacular.  We'd likely need half the paint for our little cars...
