Title: Secondary oil pressure relief valve

I've been trying to figure out the part number for the oil pressure relief valve. Some people said only the later model M42s had them but I'd like to add them if I don't already have them. I finally found the part, but in my search I found a second part and I'm wondering if I should replace it too.

As far as I know, the valve in the timing case is the one that got updated. The original part was metal and I guess was prone to wear. The updated part is plastic. I replaced the valve, spring, sleeve & circlip.

The second part you showed looks to be in the cylinder head and I haven't ever heard of any updates / issues with it.

Replace 5,6,7,8. 5 is now a plastic part as mentioned. Reason for the change was the metals expanded and contracted at different rates meaning the valve could jam shut.

You can replace the return valve if you want to, cant hurt. I dont think its necessary but if it provides piece of mind...

You only need absolutely need 5 and 6.  
I have ordered the second part and returned it because it did not fit.

I just joined after reading this thread, because I am having a similar issue. I am trying to figure out what is wrong ... why my oil pressure warning light comes on, generally, at some point after engine reaches operating temperature. I intend to post my own thread about this issue, however would pose one question here as related to the pressure valve.

The production date of my 92 E36 318is 5speed is June of 1992. (Is this the plastic one?)

The (mystery) non-return valve looks to have had some changes from the same car produced in may of 92. I wonder if it is plastic and if it could melt... ?  Referencing part at the given pelican link:.  318is (1992-95, from June 1992) Coupe Manual Transmission, with M42 Engine (E36)

I regret having to make an introduction under such dire circumstances, in someone else's thread, so, I'll put this aside for the time being, to perhaps reference at a later time, in thread dedicated to my own situation. For now, I'm hoping to just learn more about these valves.
