I'm over in Pittsburgh myself.  I think JorgeConrico is in West Chester, but he hasn't been active in a while.

Check these links out for a motor:

You might get lucky, nobody really wants M42's.  I'd get on R3v & see if anyone is doing an M52 swap & looking to sell off the old motor reasonably.  You just missed an entire power train/harness & DME in Jersey a couple months ago for $350.

I haven't done it, but I'm pretty sure all the e36 motors will swap, even M44's.  Unless you want to get creative, knock sensors won't work, and you'll have to swap the DISA intake manifold for your stock e30 one.  Oil pans are different too, swap the old one over.  Later models had serpentine belt drive, you might be able to use them as-is or replace the pulleys for the stock e30 v-belt setup.

Later ones had the improved timing chain deflector rail and tensioner as well.  The M42 was installed up to '96 IIRC.

Yep, later motors are definitely a good upgrade.  If possible get compression numbers, crank end-play & check the cam gears for pointy-ness before buying.  IIRC the gearbox is different but compatible.  The driveshaft can take up the slight difference in length.

I'm in south jersey, 20 minutes from Philly.  Newbie also, having bought my first e-30 3 weeks ago.  I did drive an e-21 for 10 years but that doesnt count

I got her and I'm psyched.  Been getting to know my first LSD in all this rain :D

I'll be looking through it w/ a technician on friday to see what's up.  I've got an unknown, constant whoosh kinda sound from the rear... like wind noise (no correlation with speed).  hmm
