Hey guys,
i've been lurking around the forum for quite some time, and with it back up I feel motivated to get some stuff done with my car. there is quite a bit that needs to be addressed with it and i've been picking little by little, but being 16 and having to rely on my dad's credit card to buy parts, then having to pay him is a pain. anyhow, i got a new chain tensionor in today, along with a new valve cover gasket and sparkplug seals. the car sounds much better, it also seems to rev smoother; however, for some reason it revs to 4.5k and hits rev limit. it is odd, because i seem to be able to take 2nd to around 55ish before it hits the brick wall. the previous owner had replaced the cluster with a new one because of a faulty odometer, i am really thrown on this one. any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks guys, i plan to be much more active on the boards very soon.

welcome
55 in second gear would be the normal stock redline at around 7K ( I actually think it is 57) so it would appear you have a guage problem. good luck sorting it out.

Yeah it's either a faulty cluster or you have a 325e cluster fitted (the second which I find hard to imagine). I have no experience in problem solving with E30 clusters, maybe someone else will know something??

Anyone near you have the same car? Compare cars and check out their cluster. As far as $$$, I feel your pain. I had to pick up a part time job for my mod money and I am the dad.
Welcome to the group and feel free to post the parts you need here. This group is real good about helping each other.

Somewhere on here (M42Club) is a post with a gear/speed calculator link that has the Getrag 240 ratios and speeds for given RPMs. That may be the easiest way to see if you have a rev limit problem or a guage problem.

Thanks guys, I'm sure it is a guage problem, I found the speed calculator and the car is fine, the guage is simply reading wrong. I'll probably track down a new cluster because this one is cracked and the fuel gauge is stuck. I appreciate the input.
