Hi guys,

I am looking into replacing my engine mounts but got a price form the dealer that nearly killed me ($211 AUS ea).

I was thinking.....

On my old E12, I fitted a set of Ford Escort RS2000 engine mounts and they did the job great instead of the BMW ripoff stuff.

Can anyone tell me what the diameter and height of a brand new engine mount is and are they the same on left and right hand sides?

I know there is the E28 thing as discussed elsewhere but I still might be able to do better if I get the sizes.

IIRC prettymuch all the mounts are of the same thickness.  It is the rod offsets and alignment tabe that differ.  I have heard of E21 mounts being used as well.  I think they were from a 323i, but it might have been a 320.

I'm very interested in this too. Maybe someone has an old M42 engine mount out of the car that they can measure. The required dimensions would be the diameter and height, and the location of the two threaded sections in relation to each other and the centre. Also the length of each threaded section. And are the left and right sides identical? An alignment tabs?

If you find a subsititute Cristian please let us know.

Try an OEM part supplier, they are always WAY cheaper than the stealerships in oz. I think that Bav spares in melbourne can get a pair of OEM m42 mounts for $110 each. It might be a little more, but thats roughly half what the dealer wants.

I think I paid something like $70/each from BMA.
