The M20 guys that track their cars recommend getting a crank scraper (http://www.crank-scrapers.com/bmw_m42.html). Is it needed for the M42?
What is the benifit?

The scraper pulls oil mist from the crankcase, cutting down on the crank's aerodynamic drag and oil foaming. I'm pretty sure it'd pick up a little power, but I suspect it'd be difficult to find one. Fabricating one wouldn't be that hard.
From what I recall, M50's had one from the factory, cast integrally with the crankcase.
I stand corrected...here's one for $60:

We run one in the race engine. If you've got it apart, it's tough to beat for $70.
