Title: Manual sunroof opens but won't close 1984 E30

Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first posting. My father just gave me his 1984 318i 2 door. He bought it new when I was 8 years old and never let me drive it until I was in college. It's in reasonably good shape...but will be a project car for a while...and one immediate problem I have is that the sunroof opens easily with the crank but won't close. To close it I have to 'unwind' the crank as if I were closing it, then slide the roof shut manually. This still leaves a gap so I can't park it outside for risk of it getting rained on. The roof headliner is gone so I feel I should be able to get in there and see what's wrong, just wondering if anyone knows where I should start?  Thanks
