Title: m42 vs m5x comparisons
Post by: littleboyblues on March 06, 2011, 11:11:51 AM
Does the m42 and the bigger l6 motors share anys components?
Pistons, wrist pins, rods, valves, sprins, heat bolts....anything?

If there are size similarities can they be swapped? And is there a varience in strength between the years?

Sorry, there's a lot of us on the other side of the pond. Many euphemisms do not come across easily.

It depends what you want to do. Check http://www.bmwfans.info and mahle website for piston dimensions. By swaping piston you can lower or increase compresion ratio.

C'mon guys.......of course we do.

What do you think about the 6mm valves?? They are actually in the M3 too!

How about connecting rod bushings? M3 also! I don't think the wrist pins are the same due to larger diameter in most cases? 84mm vs 86mm bore.

There are more with some modifications. I know because I have done them on my stroker motor:D

I have E36M3 valves, pistons, cam trays....E30M3 exhaust and possibly the intake plenum.

So there are definitely parts that can be swapped with or without modifications.

Cheers,
~Ralph
