Ok, so I'm looking for a used transmission and there are a few floating around on CL locally, this is just to serve as a temp. while I get my OEM rebuilt and then drop in a new clutch as well, is there any other E30 model transmissions that I can use on my 1991 318i with M42? Like a 325e transmission or the Getrag 260? Thanks all...

My understanding is that the 240 is the only transmission that fits without modifications.
Who is doing your rebuild and what are they claiming to do?

Good question. I have been looking for a replacement here in cali and after finding one salvaged in San Diego for $400, I went with one locally here for $200 with a 6 month warranty. I will probably keep the old unit, but I have heard that it is fairly expensive and requires special tools to rebuild these.

I haven't asked around yet as far as shops go...just looking into it for now, my thought process was to get a temp tranny and then rebuild my OEM one to restore it back to brand new status, that's all...and of course replace with a new clutch and all the fixin's and bushings and all...

I think Metric Mechanic are the only people that can do a better than original rebuild, at least if you believe the write up on their site. Expensive though, something like $2500. Otherwise there is something about the design of one of the bearings (input shaft?) that makes these unrebuildable.
I would love to hear that I'm wrong about that.
