My e30 is having m42 convertion too and having cant start issue too. But mine is the non EWS ecu (borch 0 261 200 950)
Below are the current condition of the engine:
-new battery
-new spark plugs
-tried another coil pack
-fuel pump working
-spark presence
-two injectors failed, currently fitted with 4 pcs m40 injector (from e36)
Engine is back firing when I try to crank it. Noticed that the lower intake manifold is black now, before that it was clean. Manage to start my engine once only but it was idling roughly, the engine gives no respone at all when I press on the accelerator pedal.

Anyone care to enlighten me?
Thanks in advance.

I'd check all sensors to BMW specification first. That will give you a baseline to start from. Especially when you're doing an engine conversion. With your symptoms I'd guess fuel pressure or AFM malfunction.

you have your spark plug wire's wrong miss firing at the wrong cylinders if not then your crank sensor is shot do u have any check engine codes ..

dave: thanks for your reply.
Appreciate if you can provide me the resistance value for the following sensors?
crank & cam PS
coolant temp sensor
AFM flap and temp sensor (measure between which pin?)

Google the '91 e30 ETM (http://rapidshare.com/#%21download%7C516l35%7C161366059%7CfdsBMW_E30_318i_318is_318ic_1991_Electronic_Troubleshooting_Manual.zip%7C3230), it has all this info. The crank sensor pins 1&2 must be about 680 ohms. Cam is about twice that, 1280 ohms.
Coolant temp sensor (front) and air temp sensor (inside the AFM case, pins 4&5 IIRC) should drop resistance as temp increases:
@68degF is 2100 to 2900 ohms
operating temp...270-400 ohms
AFM should smoothly increase resistance through the door sweep.

measured the crank and cam sensor impedance today, reading as below: -
crank: 550 ohm
cam sensor: 1278 ohm
Gonna test on the injectors & FPR these few days.
Any possibility that the impedance is still within spec but the sensor already failed?
-
Tested the injectors and FPR are working fine. But still cannot start. Can anyone help?

All,
After so many months, finally managed to get my m42 started!
End up having a broken camshaft, got the engine top overhauled.
But i'm having another issue now, the famous ticking issue. Here's a video link

This noise only appear after the car has warmed up... during cold start it's quiet...
I've changed the chain tensioner.
Thanks.
