Title: ireland e28 motor mounts on m42
Post by: AutoXSS on February 03, 2011, 09:48:02 AM
do the urethane e28 motor mounts offered by ireland fit the M42? I cant find any listed on their site specifically for the m42, figured since people were running stock e28 mounts on m42's that these might work fine....

stock e28 535i/is mounts work, not the e28 528e. So first check that. Then you have to remove a metal tab from the stock one which is easy to do with a dremel. Not sure how the IE ones are. If you get past those 2 items, then you should be ok. But the stock ones are very hard for the m42 and cause more vibration. If the IE was are harder it might be too much.

What benefits do stronger motor mounts really offer?

There isn't really any benefit. The E28 535i/S ones cost about 60% less than the M42 ones, but that's about it.

Stiffer motor mounts combined with the M42, which runs rough for a 4 cylinder, will transmit a ton of noise & vibration into the cabin. I rode with them for 4 years, and when I finally shelled out the cash for M42 mounts I couldn't believe the difference. It was like a new car.

So, stick with M42 mounts, unless this is a track only car. There is a slight improvement in throttle response, but not nearly enough of one to justify the noise & vib in a street car.
