I just picked up a 1991 318i with the M42 in it....and the exhaust is in sad shape. I'm looking to replace everything from the header back. While I don't have to have the best, I would like to see a slight performance increase without spending too much money. I've seen a few setups on ebay for around $350 or so....but everything else I look at is pricey. What is the best system to go with for the least amount of money? If all else fails I can have my friend fab one up, but it would be easiest to just buy and install. Thanks in advance!
Here is the one on ebay I found:

Cheapest is find a stock replacement at a junkyard or something, or if your friend can weld, that would be cheap also. I have never heard of the ebay one you posted though.

Ditch the cat, replace with a long resonator and a good flowing muffler. Keep the headers the flow really well.

California car here... New 50 state cat from Magnaflow - $150. New OEM Resonator from autopartswarehouse - $150 Magnaflow muffler with welding $125. I'll let you know how it all goes once I get it in. :P

By far the Magnaflow 14815 series muffler is the best sounding as well as price
