Title: Viewer discression advised
Post by: Tonyb on September 22, 2006, 12:48:57 AM
My son was in an accident the night before and we took on some heavy damage! Some jerk in an F-150 was yelling out his window at someone he knew while my son waited behind him to move, as they started to move my son looked over to see who he was talking to and when he looked forward the jackass was stopped in front of him to turn left without a signal! When he hit the truck he was on the brakes but couldnt stop in time. The car looks so bad because the bumper went right under the truck and the grill section took the impact. If it was a car instead of a truck we would have much less damage. Nobody was hurt, but my son took it really hard for smashing up the car I rebuilt for him, but I told him I can rebuild the car but not him, so I already started to search for the parts. The bad news is that I dropped the collision on the car last year since it was a 1991 model and my son was 16. I can't swing full coverage on my Volvo and BMW.
Here are before and after pics. I'll post as we go.    New pics down below.

Ouch. I hate truck drivers - one killed my last car because he thought i was going to run the red light....

Glad to hear no one got hurt, and best of luck getting it sorted mate!

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but thats the reason why rubber necking is bad. Glad to hear your son is alright.

Glad to hear your son is ok.  My son is 17 and has an E36 so I can relate.  Hope you guys can get this worked out.  Keep us posted and I will keep an eye out for parts.

I have some spare grilles for beside the kidney I can send ya.  Sorry but no hood/fenders.

Did the radiator take damage/get smashed into the clutch-fan?  I have a spare radiator and I think there is a fan somewhere out there.

Sorry to see this happen to another clean 318iS!  Glad everyone was OK.

Thanks for all the replies and kind words from everyone! My son is a boxer and he has a fight on the 30th, and I think this gave him some motivation cause I just got done holding the heavy bag for him and he made my liver move around!
As for the car, It still runs and nothing leaked out. I did the fan delete and I'm sure that saved the motor. If the clutch was still on it would have pushed the pump in. Not sure about the radiator yet, but I do know we can get it back in shape since the frame was not hit. I do have another set of grills and a kidney grill, but thanks for offer.
A friend of mine has a salvage certificate, so I'm gonna have him look for a donor car. He just got an e36 for 200.00,so I should be ok for parts. If can't find something I'll post it here and see if anyone has it.
Thanks again everyone!  Tony

Title: Part search
Post by: Tonyb on October 31, 2006, 05:35:35 PM
I got the car home, and wrapped up for the winter so I can locate the parts needed for the rebuild in the spring. I plan on doing everything except the paint. I already have the hood, fenders, grills and lights but I need to find the radiator support, bumper cover (not the black strips), and the lower valance. I want to buy these parts new, OEM or after market will do. Any help would be great. I don't want to cut the support off the donar car because it makes the job harder to line everything up and would take to much time.
Here's a pic of the hood and fenders on the donar car, they don't look that great but they have no rust and are straight as an arrow!
Title: Good!

Great to see the progress.  Sadly I do not have any of the parts you need but willl keep an eye open.  Good hunting.

Glad your son is ok.

That looks like it will not be a huge hassle to fix. Could have been a lot worse, in fact had it hit the bumper it actually could have done more damage than it did by sending the shock throughout more of the car. As it was, it is mainly just cosmetic. As it was, this would put less stress on him in the impact as it all acted as a crumple zone rather than trying to minimise vehicle damage.

If nothing else, I bet your son learns from it, and it is a cheap lesson. Better to have learned this way than in a more expensive car, or more worse with him getting hurt.

It is also cool to see your son appreciates your effors on the car. I know a lot of kids who couldn't care less about their first car.

Title: Ready For The Shop
Post by: Tonyb on April 28, 2007, 08:41:05 PM
The car was set to go on Friday, but the flat-bed was not back in time, so now Monday will be the pickup. We have to pick up the parts from the donar car next Saturday, so everything should be coming together soon. Next step is the DASC and suspension. We can almost smell the rubber!

Good to see you back on the road.  Question, do you have the DASC?

No,I don't have it ready, but I do have the $$$ ready! I'm waiting till the car is back from the shop just in case something goes wrong. I'm hoping the M42 kit is ready by then as well?

Hey guy's, as you can see, I tore out some of the a/c already, but I want to know if I can do the A/C, P/S delete with the DASC. Any help (idea's) would be a big help. Can I just use a diff. size belt?

Here's a link to a core support for $77.00:
http://www.carpartswholesale.com/cpw_store/buy.php?make_text=bmw&model_text=318_series&year=1991&part_name=radiator_support&brand_name=replacement&ml=318-is-001&make_code=
There's aftermarket body part places all over the place. May be cheaper local without added shipping. I'd grab all the little stuff off the donor like the hood hinge and plastic pieces.

I think that DASC uses the AC belt to drive the SC, but you could get rid of the AC all you would have to do is fab up a belt tensioner.

Only cost me a case of beer to get it to the shop!

If it needs the ac pulley, can't I just use a shorter belt from the crank? Never mind I see your point, still need something to tighten the belt.

does the core support weld or bolt in? Mine is a little tweaked, and while I could try to un tweak it, if that is a bolt in part, I'd be all over it. Welding though, is beyond my capabilities.

It has a bunch of spot welds. Thats why I left it on for the shop to deal with.

I picked up my parts today! Took the whole day, but it was worth it, I got a hood (plus hinge), both fenders, lower valance, bumper, and a perfect radiator for $500.00. The bumper is flawless, including the turn signals, and the valance has perfect fog lights still attached(ebay!). I just orderd an "Is lip",and all the missing small parts, hood foam, clips, hoses, etc... Next step will be the DASC, 4.10Lsd, and suspension. Will post pics with updates as it moves along!

I dropped off the new oem spoiler, clips, hood foam, grills,etc.. today. The new rad support came to the shop today also, so the work should start by Friday! Put the battery in and she fired up on the the first turn of the key. I was worried about the motor, since it's been down since Sept. 06! Purred like a kitten!
