So, how did you end up finding the Club? As part of better figuring out how to cultivate membership across the web (and world), it is important to see how folks wind up in this little haven of M42 glory. So, fill out the poll, and comment if you feel the need. I am always a fan of the 'random find' story...looking on Google for red ceramic tree-pots and somehow having this site appear in the (unrelated) mix!
How did I find it? I sorta had the idea for an E30 M42 club and got a little group going within the Bimmerforums E30 tech section. It was done in a single (monsterous) thread on October 21, 2005. Once it became clear that there truly was a REAL interest in exploring the M42's potential, a couple very generous guys got this forum up & running. You know who you are lol, chime in!
The beginning of the movement:

Heard about it on European car club of australia through streetspec_iS.

I think I found the bimmerforum post through a search engine. I had just gotten the car the day before so I was on a quest for all the M42 info I could find.

Bimmerforums. I'm member #2:)

Before I bought my car I was searching google for 318is and you guys came up. Also before I joined I read the forums and was so impressed with the focus of the group I joined. I hope this place never resorts to the trash talking and flaming and questionable off topic content, common on so many forums.

I saw Sheepdog's post on Bimmerforums about a bunch of M42 upgrades. I accidentally voted for "saw post on other forum" though.
bmwman91's accidental mis-edit in Deutschbag's post:
Crap I meant to click QUOTE not EDIT.

am i the only that caught that? we should totally to do this haha
:D
I found out there was going to be some kind of m42 oriented forum around a year ago on bimmerforums. It was great to see to that there would be a forum dedicated to our cars. I was tired of seeing everything posted, related to e30 325i's.
Im glad to be here since the forum was just starting up.
viva la m42club

yeah I don't get the joke with thumper3ld. Does he run around saying he is member #2 as much as I flaunt being #1 lol?
The forum is glad that people joined, too.
Viva M42Club, damn right. It will only be a few more years until total world domination.....

I moved your vote. The poll must be kept accurate, or the rip in the fabric of space-time will grow out of control, enveloping everything.

I found the club through the Bimmerforums thread starting it.
I found the site when I decided someone needed to take Bmwman91's idea seriously and run with it. I had room on my server so I went and registered the domain, figuring (hoping?) that Bmwman91 would appreciate helping it get started.
Shortly after another person who took it seriously helped fund the forum software and we were off and running.
I hope everyone has found this place helpfull.

I found the forum through eurocca.net, an Aussie BMW forum.
Good to see some of the other boys on here as well.

Found the forum through GOOGLE when i found out i was getting a 1991 318IC

Anyways welcome to the forum, and I'm glad you found what you were looking for!
What do you have planned for the car?
Thanks.
Well for the car, first I need to find a decent 89-91' 319is
perferably red. The problem at this point is that there aren't any here in Lithuania (the ones I know are rallying, track driving, or just rotting on some junkyard), so my best shot will be to find one in Germany near Kiel. Then with the hep of my friend ship it on a local ferry.
And that would be one of the most difficult parts of the project.
Then the fun part begins, as it happens I work at a local bodywork-paint service, so i'm hoping after some time begging my boss on my knees, he will lend me some space in the garage. After that I just wake up every sunday will a huge smile and rush to work.
Then basically it's straight forward work:
1. Strip the car completly (leaving only the tyres, and the wheel to turn them)
2. Repair all rust spots and dents (originally thought on galvanizing the whole frame, but dont know exactly if there are bigg enought galvanazing baths in this country)
3. Base-coat it, and then take it to the painting-chamber, paint it with original BMW BrilliantRot color, and hope to put 4-5 layers of clear.
4. Take it back to the work-shop and leave i covered with a huge blancket.
5. This is probably more difficult than buying the car, as failure here may kill the project with tons of money wasted.
Strip the engine, port and polish it, and do a complete rebuild (X-raing the block and the head is what concernes me, as well as proper shaft balancing, I don't know if there are really compitent people who could do this, after all the engine is going to spin @ 7000rpm)
6. Most common mods: short shift kit, LSD, probably bilstein suspension with H&R springs, sway bars on this car are as thik as on the M3, so no upgrade here, complete poly bushing set, recently considered a close ratio gear box as well as a lighter flywheel. Chrome tower strut bars would make the engine bay, and the trunk look killer, but availability of these things is a concern. 15" lightweight rims if i can find the ones that look good, or Original BBS CrossSpokes. Original BMW sports seats or some aftermarket ones if i cand find any. Other mods (pads, lights, trim, etc.)
7. Assemble the whole thing together, ang get my MOT (or what it's called?)
8. Dyno run the car (if I have any money left ;) ) And custom chip tune, or just slap a aftermarket one
I hope you stayed with me through this long post :)

Ha Ha. I can vouch for that! I have almost the same answer except I also (not sure why so recently instead of so long ago) but nevertheless heard about the forums here on R3V where I've been visiting for a long time, since 2002/3 back when E30Sport used to be around.
Either way, I am glad to finally have found this place guys! I'm sure I'll get into things much more once exams are over in a few weeks!
Cheers,
Pete

While we are primarily an e30 site, anyone with an m42 is welcome, even those who do not have one. There is at least one 325 and one other e36 here.
Welcome.

this site by someone over at bmw2002faq.com. I hang out over there. I have a 72 and a 75 Turbo undergoing resto now (http://www.sports-car-restoration.com). My daughter was moving and needed a car. I called a hand in CA and he was kind enough to suggest a 92 318is, which she subsequently bought. I like E30's although I've never owned one. When you have my two cars you get to appreciate the benefits of efi. As well, the "is" is high style imho!

I feel out of place then:( I have an E36 with a M42.
I found this site doing research on the DASC on Bimmerforums. I'll be lurking and looking out for good deals. But I'm glad to see there is a site dedicated to our engines:)
-
hey guys , i also got the link from BF

i was told about it on another forum i use, http://www.e30zone.co.uk

Same, saw a link on E30 zone.

hammo!! you're on here and all now!!
there's a few of us zoners with iS's on here! great site mate
-
Hey! Yeah, iv been browsing for a while and finally registered. So far it looks like a great forum. good to have a dedicated IS one!
-
I still think you either ought to do a sister site, or else create an E36 'gulag' within the m42club.com forums as I'm pretty sure there were more E36 cars produced with M42 motors than E30 cars with M42 motors! :D
However, as a former E30 owner (and there is a huge part of me that wishes I still owned an E30 - preferably a 318i/iS), I can understand the love for the series and the M42B18 motor.
However, I did notice that the subtitle of the site has changed to 'Home of the e30/e36 M42', so good on ya!

Wikipedia. I had already ran across the ad for the car in Craigslist and was doing my homework, reading the M42 wiki page when I saw this link.
It's been a good beater so far, hopefully it'll be a good track beater in short order. It will be the fifth car I've driven over four track days when I make it to my next one...
-
E30zone.co.uk as well...

Missed this thread when I first joined...
I kinda saw the forum mentioned all over the place including bimmerforums, google, a few sigs. figured I should probably join up considering I just bought a 318. So far, it's been great with none of the flaming of other forums as well as a great deal of helpful info. Thanks everyone! ;)
-
Was on e30 zone and a thread was made about a 318is forum so i searched and found ya.
-
Some kind soul posted a link to one of these forums on the (yahoo) E30 Digest in an effort to answer another listmember's question. I don't know whether it answered that question, but he at least helped one person, so that's good.

Wanted a good site to learn some advices about my BMW 318is.
I'm on BMWQUEBEC, MONTREALRACING, trying to get on BIMMERFORUMS but there is a field error I think.
http://www.google.com helped me also.
Je parle français principalement.
Québécois je suis.

While Bimmerforums is a good place for general e30 info, it is not good for M42 information.

Although I'm a member of e30zone, I found m42club via google. And by Jupiter am I glad I found it.
I'm part way through a rebuild of one of my engines just now, and was struggling to find good information and advice about the m42. Then I discovered m42club. This forum is truly brilliant!
-
heard about this forum from bmwman91 on bimmerforums
-
Found it on a post by macmep on bf.c
Finally...folks won't advise me to SELL my 318! :D

Hi - I heard of you from another forum albeit from an advert for a car 318iS of course, and people were invited to look at several other sites, yours was one of them. So I did!
-
I found this awesome site
http://bmw.e30tuner.com/news.php
and followed a link
-
I found it trough google! Well actually, I found it too late. If I had this information before I bought my 318is, I wouldn't have bought it. Because, I would have known that it wasn't a little thing that caused the engine not to start >_<

I have been wrenching on E30s for a few years now. My buddy just recently acquired a 90 318is. He originally found your site and turned me on to it.
Since I started working on these M42's I needed a solid resource for M42 specific information. Well this site fits that bill perfectly.

Google + M42 = M42club.com
I'd been wanting a better E30 since i trashed my 325e. So i decided to do about 5 months research on M42's. Wikipedia told me about the profile gasket failing, so i had to make sure that was the only defective with this motor. After reading around this forum i knew this was the best enthusiasts car of the 21st century. I wish BMW never made M20 and only made M42's!
-
i heard about it on r3v. i picked up my 318 last august as my 3rd e30. im never gonna go back to the m20. i love the characteristics of the m42 too much.

I had to do my timming chain and was looking for some "encouragement". Wow!!!!! After looking for an hour or so, I ended up on the forum page. Holy crap !!!. Four and a half hours later, I have more info about my car than i thought existed. You guys are gods. I re-did my timming chain in a day! The links and pics were a god send, the simple, straight forward instruction made it easy to follow, and the confidence you gave me was awsome. I can,t thank you all enough. I am now a PROUD member who can,t wait to start doing all the cool stuff I've read about to My Baby. I've got a million questions ( which I'll look in the forums for answers first!) so please bare with me.
Again, thanks for your help, and who's ever idea this site was, YOU ROCK !!!

Am with you on that Big Red. Similar circumstances led me here, after a search on good 'ol Google for some answers.
My 8v M40 has decided to give up the ghost, and i've been lucky enough to find an 87,000mile M42 with ALL ancillaries to do a conversion, even better that it's out of an E30 already. I have a LOT of research to undergo, and I have no idea what i'm doing (mechanical wise) so it's a rather sharp learning curve. Oh well, am never one to give up easily and as i'm already TOTALLY devoted to my E30 so I thought it a shame to get rid of it.
Here's to another top forum and some happy times.

r3v. Just joined after buying a barn find. Its my 3rd E30 and finally one worth my hard earned $. So far I'm enjoying the information here and the helpful attitude held by the members.

Hi there guys! Was doing alot of research and reading on the E30 when I first got mine, it immediatly struck me as a car I wanted to keep and drive all the time. But it's slightly underpowered (ZA spec 318i has the SOHC M40) and thats when my quest for knowledge and more power began... I wanted to do a 6pot swap untill I heard about the M42 (found here in the E36 318i). And being a 4pot 16valve fan I googled the "M42 engine" and M40 to M42 engine swaps to get more info and... ... M42club!! perfect!
Thanks guys!

Spliffy, can you easily acquire an M42? I'm not sure how common the motor is in South Africa. Might be that the M42 head fits right on your M40 block...
You do get some other great cars we didn't, that's for sure. If there are any 333i's left let me know. I always thought the Ford Sierra XR8 was a fine idea that we should have had here.

Good day Dave
Luckily the M42 was in all the E36 318i's (E36 318is came with the 1900cc either M44 or M43) so just have to look for 1 with low mileage or a reconditioned 1. I've read that the head doesn't fit the block 100% although I haven't checked it out for myself yet. The other thing is that the E30 M42 ECU isn't here in SA so I'm researching stand alone management systems(something i still know very little about). But there's lots of info on this site that I read through and it helps alot.
I've been unlucky not to have driven in an XR8 or 333i yet. Saddening I know, and where I live Cape Town there are very few 333i's left, e30clusa.co.za is my home forum and we had a BMW fest/track day recently and there wasn't 1 333i. Another favourite is the 2.7litre 325is with the mtech2 kit, love that car! Sorry 'bout this long post!
Looking forward to my next visit!
Kind Regards:)
-
i w as searchin M42 turbo kits and found a thread on here about someone sellin it but i didnt join quite yet
