Title: My '91 318is "slicktop"...
Post by: billb on September 18, 2006, 02:05:12 PM
...heh, like that term!  This is my daily driver, grocery-getter, track car, date-night car, stress-reliever econobox.

Here's my story of "Junior":

VIN WBAAF9313MEE65134.  I found it in December 2002 at a corner garage.  Here's a photo of it on the garage lot, before I bought it:

It sat there for several weeks before I finally stopped one night and put my business card on the window, with a note saying "call me if you ever want to sell this car".  I had been looking for a nice, alpine white E30 for about 2 years.  This one had a straight body, leatherette interior, and looked like it only needed a little TLC to bring back to life.  About three weeks later, I got a call from the shop, saying the car was actually at the shop for a prepurchase inspection, but that the inspection suggested it needed about $2000 in repairs.  They decided not to do that.  The repairs required were: all new A/C system due to a leak, a new instrument cluster due to nonfunctioning speedometer, and a new speed sensor in the diff.  Actually, the cluster repair was a 10-minute fix with a soldering iron.

I inquired as to the price, and was directed to the owners, with whom I reached a deal.  I paid $2900 for it in 2003.  I have owned it since March 2003.  The car is from Florida originally, so it's dash has split in a few places.  A previous owner had the windows tinted, and the most recent owner had the tint removed, also damaging the defroster grid beyond repair. Profile gasket done by previous owner (no receipts, but visual confirmation)

Factory options: sunroof delete, central locking delete.  No limited slip.

What have I done to the car? * items are when I was chasing a rough running condition.  The new coils solved it.  As usual, the last and most expensive thing to replace.  I have done everything below except charge the A/C, mount the tires, and have it aligned.

Underhood/Performance
Here's under the hood, pretty clean:

Glad to be here!  I've been looking for a great forum to share this fun little car with, and looks like I've found a home!

Wow sounds like you refreshed the whole car! Add an IS lip to the front of it :). It'll look a lot better.
Title: Actually, I went with an "i" lip. I like it just fine...

...especially when I need to get under the car, up on my ramps.  And while I'm sure it would look better, it wouldn't look $200 better to me.

But thanks for your input!

...equals about $200.

That's the cost of a set of tires, or a driving school, or, or, or...

Again, thanks for your opinion, but unless the "is spoiler fairy" drops one in my driveway, I'll keep it like it is.

I have a alp white.  Good to see the repairs and mods.  Why does everyone take the FL cars outta FL?  I had to pick mine up in VA. It too was a FL car.  If you have a parts wish list let me know.  I have a few things that are OEM & alp white.

If you are lucky...  I scored one at the yard for $40.  :D

Bill, is that a stock suspension???
Title: Yeah, that'd be a find!!

Yep, stock springs with Bilstein HD shocks all around.  Refreshed all bushings and mounts as listed above.  Is it high in the front?  Sure, exaggerated by the 205/60s.  But, I don't have to worry about scraping my oilpan off!
Title: Wouldn't have a good, straight, uncracked trunk spoiler would you?

  • new Eberspacher muffler and hangers
  • new foam underhood insulation

Nice ride. Can you describe the rough running condition characteristics that you had? I'm in a similiar boat and throwing parts at it which aren't helping. I'm thinking the coils might be a possiblity too. Did you actually check the coils with a multimeter before you replaced them?

Can you shed some more light on this Eberspacher muffler and sound characteristics?

Did the new foam underhood insulation quiet anything down in the cabin? Mine is torn up too but will probably only replace it if it makes a difference in sound levels.

Lastly, I love the license plate filler. Did you get this piece from BavAuto?

BTW, I just upgraded to Mtech1 so I'll be putting my factory IS rear spoiler up for sale soon. The spoiler is Diamond Swarchz however.

It would not accelerate.  Stuttered like it was running on 2-3 cylinders until it cleared 4000 rpm, then it would run.  I did not scope the coils, against Mike Miller's advice.  I just paid my money and took my chances.  And I was right.  The coils were $32 each when I bought them, so it was actually cheaper than two hours of shop time.

OEM sound.  Nothing fancy.  It was a cheap, OEM replacement.  I would like something with a little more throat, but not until this one rusts out.  3.5 years and still looks brand new.

I did not drive it long enough with the old foam there.  The old stuff was shredded and falling off.  I would imagine the full 325is underhood piece would be quieter.  I really did mine to save the paint from getting cooked.

Lastly, I love the license plate filler. Did you get this piece from BavAuto?
I ordered it from BMA (http://www.bmaauto.com).  I think it cost me around $28 in 2004.  License plate surround  p/n 51-13-1-961-242

Have you considered the euro plater filler?

I believe the U.S. and Euro plate fillers are $40 shipped from Patrick @ BMA

Yeah but not my taste since I have a DS color and would want something that stood out more. $40 shipped is comparable to BavAuto which has them at $32 + shipping.

I found for heavier grease and dirt, Castrol Super Clean(purple bottle) does a good job too.
