I've just about finished my M42 conversion into a 316 shell. It should be on the road in the next couple of weeks. Obviously I'll be quite bored with no spannering to do so I've started researching turbos.
I'm going to be keeping it low-budget, so I'm going to me using the chopped up M50 turbo ebay manifold and a second hand turbo. However I will be running MS and will be aiming for at least 250bhp on stock mechanicals.
Everyone who has turbo'd the M42 has used a different turbo so I'm not sure what the best route to take is? Turbo options I've considered so far are;
VW 1.8t
Mitsi Evo
Volvo?
Scooby
Those are the most popular turbo applications over here I suppose. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be about right for the M42?
Heres a quick photo of the car :)

Thanks mate. How much boost are you running at?
-
currently 0 because i had to build a new motor. but im shooting for about 15-18 psi.
should yield 275-300 crank hp with a standalone tune

on a budget, a turbo from an M21 diesel (we only got those in the 5-series... may also be in the 3er over there?) is the same spec as a volvo one; T3 .42/.48AR i think? should be good for a wide powerband on an M42.

I was hoping to run somewhere around 10 - 12psi (0.7 - 0.8 bar). So this size of turbo is probably too small.
I think we did get the M21 engine though, in the E30 as well as the E28.
-
Previously I was running a GT2871R, on 20~22psi the car made 213kw at the wheels, quite a nice turbo that was, I would recommend it
I’m upgrading now to a GT3076R

I assume you have upgraded the internals?

the ARs may look small, but it's still a 50-trim compressor-
run the numbers for yourself if you like, the t3 50-trim is the 3rd map:

(i wouldn't have suggested it unless i'd already looked into it myself ;))

yeh i have custom forged JE pistons, comp ratio 8.0:1
i have Hbeam rods in there now too, but for what you are looking at you dont need rods, the standard ones are fine, they are quite good

Thanks deekay. I still haven't had a chance to have a proper play with that calculator but it looks very useful.
Like clutchkick said, I've been looking at Garrett T28 turbo's off SR20DET engines and the like. It looks like this one has an AR of 60.

when funds allow I would really like to upgrade to this new turbo that just came out. Its really an awesome compressor

What are those wheels on your car by the way?

Grab a T3/T4 hybrid off ebay and rebuild with garret seals ... Mine has lasted two years with no problem

I like that idea, after checking some prices. I assume it's not a garrett manufactured turbo, just a pattern part?
Can you tell me some more about your car? Stock motor, how much boost, management, etc...

places like this can hook you up :)

Clutchkick; How do you find the T28? Can you give a quick description of when boost starts to build, and when peak boost is reached. (After its run). And also what are those wheels?
