Title: E36 M42 into an E30 318is
Post by: BlueBMW on September 09, 2010, 06:38:04 AM
My motor has been running great, no problems, but I'm getting the bug to do some sort of a power upgrade.  An opportunity has presented itself for me to get a nice motor on the cheap!  I am wondering if someone has some advice on what all would be needed for the swap...

Its an M42 out of a 94 318i, but here's the kicker... its been built from the ground up for a turbo setup.  Not sure everything that's been done, but I know it has 8:1 pistons and has had head work done.  Timing components (which my motor desperately needs) are all new.  The motor comes with a turbo, the manifolds, intercooler, piping etc.  Everything but a fuel controller.  The last owner was a silly kid who kept messing with the adjustments and his daddy got tired of paying to have it retuned every few weeks.  Apparently they were running close to 20psi on it which is WAY more than I would intend to run.

The kicker... for everything its only $750, so its kind of hard to pass up.

Can I simply swap in that motor using my e30 m42 oil pan etc, and my e30 m42 intake etc?  I know I'll have to do some sort of engine management, but are there any other pitfalls to expect when using an E36 m42 in an e30?  I know the piping etc wont work for me.  They were bottom mounting the turbo (below the oil pan, no wonder it smoked!)  I intend to top mount.

Pictures to come!
