got a 318is with 120k miles on it for 460$$$, yup.... less than 500 bucks!!!
why did it cost so little? the motor was over heating, and the previous owner did not want to spend any money on the car, they just wanted to get rid of it and recover what money they could....
http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2742
this is a popular thread with all the m42 guys. "the mess under the intake" well, the hoses in my car was just as bad as the pictures in this thread, so ALL the rubber hoses in the engine are being replaced...... actually every rubber piece on the car is going to be replaced......
the before pic's

and after a quick wash
(http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m574/dakkon1/318is/photo-15.jpg)
and the interior, as it was when the car was picked up
(http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m574/dakkon1/318is/photo-2.jpg)
i would NEVER have imagined that the interior of this car would look like THAT....
but not all the interior is perfect... :(
(http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m574/dakkon1/318is/photo-4.jpg)
the dash has 3 large cracks in it... already have a new one on the way... and have a few auctions on ebay I'm watching for the switches and the OBC....
And what did the engine bay look like you ask?
there it is, in all of its glory...
and after a cleaning...
Now the fun begins....
and after its out of the car?
WoW, Grease and slime?!?!?!?!
Not any more!!!
and the transmission???
yup it got cleaned also!
all the drive train in its temporary home..
and now the engine bay is pretty clean now that everything is accessible!!
And, now that everything is out of the car, for 19 year old parts, there was only 1 casualty...
this is the aux fan temp switch that goes into the radiator on the passengers side. I am currently trying to find a replacement for the connectors, and not having much luck... does anyone have any advice??? i would REALLY appreciate it....
the motor is waiting for all the gaskets to arrive, EVERY gasket in the motor with the exception of the head gasket is being replaced, we ordered a new head gasket, but it seems like everything with the head gasket is fine, and don't really want to take the head off when everything seems ok, and it doesn't seem like doing a head gasket on this car would be that hard with the motor in the car incase it does need to be done at a later date, the thermostat and water pump will also be replaced while were at it.
the clutch, will be a stock sachs and the flywheel I'm planning on is the JB racing flywheel from bimmerworld... 9lbs... stainless steel clutch line from UUC..
suspension.....
from the surfing that i have done AKG seems popular.. so the car is receiving all polly bushings from AKG, with the exception of rear trailing arm bushings, those will be stock rubber....
The suspension, control arms/tie rods ect are also on the way....
for the rest of the suspension, turner motorsport will be the source of the shocks/struts/springs and possible sway bars..
I'm thinking about Team dynamic's wheels that Bimmerworld has.... 13# each....
Does anyone have any ideas, or something that i have over looked?

First of all great find...The interior alone is worth 500...
The only thing a little odd is that it has bottlecaps...Thought all is's came with weaves...I could be wrong..
And I know it is a little more of expense, but now would be a great time to do a Z3 steering rack swap...So easy when the engine is out..Just did one on mine and you would not believe how much better it handles...go-kart on steroids....lol

That's an awesome find. The only one that's turned up around here has serious frame rust and torn seats. I missed one for $650 a little while ago, also had some tears in the seats.
I found this for the connector & pigtails...Shogun is a legend for his 7-series stuff.
http://bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/811221
Part number: 61 13 1 378 410
old part number is 61 13 0 492 947
DIFFERENCE between old and new is:
old ones were for angled pins, the new one is for straight pins.
The angled pins do not fit into the new plug.
So besides the plug you also need new straight pins with cables.
I did the same. You anyway need new pins and cable.
Circular connector / D 2, 5 mm System
Round receptacle 2.5, watertight, there you can decide between:
61 13 0 007 441 0,5-1,0 MM
I used
61 13 0 007 442 1,0-2,5 MM

i just grabbed that plug from a you pull it and spliced it in.

ordered this
(http://www.nexternal.com/bimmerworl/images/JB_300.JPG)
a pair of these
(http://www.nexternal.com/bimmerworl/images/ToughCABs,%203002.jpg)
sachs clutch kit from bav
(http://www.bavauto.com//assets/product_images/hardpart/clutchkit.jpg)
also ordered new front end grills, and hood cowl grills. Also got tie rods.
called autosolutions, ordered a ultimate shift kit, but he has to manufacture one for me, and that will not be done until the 3rd.... so the drive train might be complete minus the shifter this weekend, depending on how the motor tear down, reassembly goes.
so theres a cool 1300$+, but closer to completion so its all good....
-
Not that one..Nothing M3 style or the 3.0l Z3...They both use a "variable" rack where the non-M Z3 uses a "linear" rack...
This is the one I got:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Steering-Rack-Servo-Long-Rack-Z3-2-3-ROADSTER-/370134746977?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories
Offered $275 and they accepted..Perfect rack with complete tierods...
Trust me...It is a bitch to do with the motor in...At least when all you have is jack stands..

any modifying to get it to connect up to the stock searing column? or is it pretty much just "plug and play?"
Thanks, ill keep an eye out for another from them.
Also i just ordered new tie rods today, do you know if the 318is tie rods will work with this rack, or do i need to buy different new tie rods if i go this route?
Thanks again.

Check out the thread here:
http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=66247
Pretty much just a couple of spacers needed for our cars..The steering linkage DOES NOT need modified...Our airbag cars have an adjustable steering column. You still may need to dremel out the plate and/or firewall..Once again---Easier with engine out..
And you don't need all the parts listed...The original OP decided to replace a lot of the older components with new ones..
-
I took your advice Wizard, offered them 250$ and they took it... Now I just need an LSD, the rest of the suspension and some stuff to put in the dash....
-
Nice ride!
Any troubleshooting for why its been overheating?
Looks like most of the oil is coming from the valve cover and timing covers. My personal favorite that I've witnessed people getting rid of the car for is the oil filter housing o-ring. It's like a $1 part and leaks like a sieve cause it's under pressure.
As for the fan switch I just used one from an earlier model with blade connectors. I've wired in a high speed spal 13" fan to the high speed circuit. It turns on at lower temp, and removed both factory fans.
A note on turner for suspension. I advise to check the struts as they are rebuilt bilsteins. You'll note the welding bead around the top isn't precise. I've had a couple bad experiences so starting buying new with bimmerparts.com.

parts started arriving earlier this week..!!!
some of which were the poly bushings from AKG, and the lightweight flywheel from Bimmerworld!..
now the fun with the motor begins...
I ordered new chain guides, and come to find out, the ones in the motor are still in pretty good condition, but 19 year old plastic..... i think i would rather have new guides in there for the cost, and the Very little extra work at this point.
original spark plugs?
my money is on yes....
cams looked good...
pistons, no holes, and everything still has a nice fit. No scoring on the cylinder walls.
no bent valves...
so, we are not going to be replacing any valves, or pistons. Just gaskets.. we will be cleaning everything up though.
took about an hour to break down the motor, now all the back order stuff needs to arrive, so that we can start putting everything back together.
-
it was over heating because of a coolant hose going into the head was jacked.... actually ALL the hoses were decaying, cracking ect.... the water pump and thermostat were original, but seemed to be in good working order... they are still getting replaced though.
actually the valve cover gasket was in really good condition.... go figure. the oil was leaking from one of the gaskets in the timing case. As best my buddy could figure out, during the tear down.
people with little to no mechanical ability, do not want to deal with it, they just want it to work.. very few people would see a 460$ car, that was over heating as a possible Great deal....

a mini update.

I recommend you to replace hydraulic lifters with new from VW. Imho marks on cams show that they are not perfect.
P.S. do not forget about sump bolts.

we may have found the source of the leak!!... the rear timing case gasket...
couple gallons of brake cleaner...
Going to pick up a harbor freight parts cleaner later today, they are on sale for almost 50% off!!...
also grabbed a few random sockets that weren't on hand...

and the new
(http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m574/dakkon1/318is/13.jpg)
the old clutch didn't look to bad, however the pivot pin was COMPLETELY jacked, basically worn away. So a new pivot pin, and release arm are on the way.
i don't know if you can see what was left from the pin in this picture or not...

And with the rear timing case on.
Right now the head is just sitting on the block, the head bolts aren't torqued in yet, still waiting for the cam gears, and timing chain stuff. Once all that stuff comes in that phase of the assembly will continue. Both cam gears, crank gear, all the plastic guides as well as a the chain will be new.
-
You should probably replace those cam sprockets while you're at it because they look rather worn!
-
yup they shipped today from getbmw parts.. i ordered both cam sprockets, crank sprocket and a new chain.

I'm a little confused on the camber/castor plates. It looks like in the last pic that it is set for toe and not camber? I could be way off base, but was just wondering.
Tell your boy he does nice welds too.

Wow, now that's a thread for the ages...thanks for posting it. One day I might be referring back to it when I overhaul my trusty '91.

there are adjustments for both toe and camber, one on each side..
here is a DIY for the kit.
http://www.s14.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21310
i only posted 2 photo's because it seemed like a lot of the e30 guys know what it is and how to do it already... so a "how to" article was not in order..

Wow, now that's a thread for the ages...thanks for posting it. One day I might be referring back to it when I overhaul my trusty '91.
i think we are doing pretty much everything that one can do, all in one shot... the car will basically be a brand new car when i pick it up......

pressing the wheels bearings in... the wheel bearing tool for the E30, is totally worth its money....

Subframe going together..
Dan decided the old half shafts weren't worth putting back in the car, so we got new ones. The subframe also received the 4.10lsd, H&R race springs and the bilsteins as well as all new polly bushings from AKG.

I ordered a full clutch kit from bav... They sent the wrong pilot bearing, so the motor had to chill on the cherry picker for a couple extra days......
the bearing bav sent is on the far right.....
the pivot pin was almost completely wore down.

now that the correct pilot bearing was in hand...

Latest update...
Here is making of new hydraulic lines for the Z3 rack.. i got the Z3 rack from bavarian recycling, and they ruined one of the hydraulic lines when they were taking the rack off of the donor car, i called them and then they sent me a pair of wrong hydraulic lines, so Dan wound up fabricating new lines... needless to say, i am not to happy with the the Z3 rack debacle... and the added work that Dan had to go though for something that was suppose to require minimal work...

how come its idling so high? cold start?
lookin good!!

Awesome work!
Your car is a lot like mine (except I have black interior). You're also doing a lot of what I plan to do, just in a much smaller time frame, lol. Very motivating thread. Keep us posted! Car is looking great!

Finally get to drive it, nice! Looks great with those wheels.
Pivot pin was about gone in ours too. One of those less than a buck parts that gets forgotten on clutch jobs lol.
Just curious why didn't paint the block?

don't know, that was one of the first times the motor was started, the motor was ran for a little bit yesterday, and it did drop we didn't replace the idle control valve, we might do that?? but i would think the idle control valve would cause an erratic and not a dead solid value...
if anyone has any ideas, i would like to hear them.
Just curious why didn't paint the block?
we didn't have a media blaster, and cleaning the block would have taken to long.. the law of diminishing returns sets in pretty quick....

each rear spring got 2 15mm spring pad's in addition to the stock pads.
Claire, Dans wife took the car out on a shake down run today. She said the car is set up really good, suspension is just right... However she said i HAD to put a clutch stop in the car.. At which point i kindly told her that I put a clutch stop in the mail yesterday :D. She also said the car turned out much better than she though that it would.
oh and the tail lights are 50$ fleebay specials, though i would try them out, i will most likely be going with OEM ones, or something of that sort.

Looks great. Hopefully mine will turn out as well. Though at a much slower pace. Only thing I would change is the tail lights but I like a stock look.

Nice find dude...the car is going to be incredible! I just bought one, not as good a deal though, and need some pointers. It has 158K on it with an oil leak from the upper oil pan gasket. Not sure if the timing chain was changed out. The suspension is worn out and the steering wheel tends to rattle/jump when I hit a bump. There is a minor rattle in the front end.
I have experience working on cars but limited to small projects...never a complete rebuild. I want to replace the front end and maybe an engine rebuild to gain more HP. Do you or anyone reading this have any recommendations? Manuals I could use? Anything to get me started? Thanks
-
i just finish reading the thread. awesome job. i'm just carious, how much the build not including the car?
-
around 10k$... the car only cost 460$..... so the cost of the car was inconsequential...

i'll ask dan what other manuals he used for the motor rebuilt, to get the torque spec's..
suspension stuff isn't hard. you just need the right tools, spring compressor, and other random tools...
biggest thing is to have the correct tools for the job.. buying tools is never a bad investment. I gave Dan extra money to cover any tools he needed that he didn't have we both knew that there would be a few tools that he would need that he didn't have on hand.
i wound up buying the wheel bearing tool, 195$ i think.. but we did both wheel bearings, and Dan will be doing the wheel bearings in both of his Ti's. If you were to go to a shop to have a wheel bearing replaced it would easily be 200$ each...
i hope this helps some.
if you do the timing chain (pelican has the best price), you might want to do the guides, and the cam gears, and the crank gear also.. cam gears are about 50$ each, and i think the crank gear was 70$
(getbmwparts.com for the gears)..

Don't forget the idler gear. getbmwparts.com also has the best price on the guides.

I skipped that gear, because mine was in good condition, and it was 126$ for that gear alone...... but if it isn't in good condition then yes, that would be something to look at as well. however this gear doesn't see any real load, so it is possible that it would be in decent condition, that was my reason for excluding that specific gear.

I know it doesn't see any real load but I don't like the idea of trusting my engine to a gear with a couple pieces of plastic holding ball bearings. BMW didn't omit it from later engines for no reason. I also saw a video someone posted on r3v where the idler failed and his engine jumped time. Also you can find some good deals on parts if you spend some time looking. By googling the part number I was able to get one new for $42 of someone on ebay.
Great job on your car. I hope mine looks as good when Im done. The wheels look great, they have an Alpina feel to them.

Thanks for the info and the advice.

I'd be interested in knowing how much you've spent on parts alone to this point.
Thanks...

Sweet build.
Just want to know how you cleaned the block surface. I am in the process of replaing the head gasket and although my surface is smooth it dose not look clean like yours did?

rolock pads with a 1/4" die grinder.
this is the die grinder i have
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200135574_200135574
you can get roloc pads off of ebay for pretty cheep
http://cgi.ebay.com/3M-Roloc-2-Dia-Bristle-Disc-120-White-/260717802579?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb3fdf453#ht_503wt_1044
you can also start with scotch brite and then go to the roloc pads...
some people say you can use the roloc pads with a drill.... Freaking good luck, you need air tools to do it in a timely manner.....

nice job, very clean, however…….
being that far into the engine, i don't understand why you didn't refresh the valves/seals or change the rod bearings. 120K is not a lot of miles, but new piston rings and a re-hone and the bores would have 0miles. new engine internals would make me sleep better then a clean engine bay.
-
Congrats ..nice job!! I like the OEM tailights again !!
curious to know , or maybe i missed, no head job(valves seals) or new bottom end work(rings, bearings)? seems like with all the work done, might as well..no?
i'm happy that you kept the car pure.. the M42 is a little jewel !!
-
Wow, I was just feeling good about myself a few days ago for getting close to starting my 318i project (replaced motor, updated some supporting parts) with no experience working on BMWs and I read this thread! Amazing work here, congrats on the build. It looks like a new car. I hope to do something similar eventually, but for now my goal is to get mine running and get a little return on investment in the shape of MPG (instead of driving a truck)

we didn't do the valves and seals at the time, because there was not a machinist that Dan trusted in his area. we did discuss this... the head is now being rebuilt....
as far as the engine internals, we didn't want to risk bearing clearance issues, the motor was running fine when it was pulled, and we didn't want to risk making a mistake with bearings, as Dan had not done a main bearing or rod bearing replacement before. I called metric mechanic and talked to those guys, they advised me to just leave it well enough alone, if everything was fine when it was pulled.
You do bring up a valid point Tom. we will see, if anything else besides the head rebuild is needed for this motor, i will go the S52 route. At that time i will do a full rebuild, as there is a Very good machinist 6 miles away from my house.

Great build!! How does the suspension feel with the race springs? Do they break your teeth going over bumps? Are they tame enough as a daily driver?
Cheers,
~Ralph

They are actually quite nice. in my E46 i have a turner motorsport cup kit. The E46 is WAY stiffer than the E30. i Daily drive the E46, so i am use to a VERY stiff suspension.. However everyone that has ridden/driven the E30 says that the suspension is the perfect balance between performance and ride quality. I would agree.
My mom drove the E30, and said she likes that suspension.
she said "it isn't as stiff as your other damn car"
Hope this helps.
