Title: someone ID this cable we found on the AFM??

Was working on the mess under the intake on our recent 318is. The car came from CA, so I'm thinking it has to do with an emissions thing was my first thought. Nothing against CA, but I've just never seen this cable on an e30 on the east coast.

The part number:1 734 516 .3 and its stamped as a BMW part. The factory harness plug that normally goes to the AFM had this cable on it and then plugged into the AFM. I'm never convinced it's a factory part either since anyone can make a cable.

It looks like an extension harness perharps fitted in a recall or only fitted for a certain batch of air flow meters. I know mine doesn't have that.

This was fitted as part of a recall.  It has some amplifier circuit in it that was supposed to address some complaint.  I have one as well.

We couldn't tell much difference with or without it driving around hard so left it out. With the setup it's running I'm not so sure I want something inline to the AFM signal. Guess my next step will be to check the pin out and open the cable end to see whats inside. Maybe find out how it works and what exactly its doing.

There are a set of resistors in a very small plastic enclosure.  BMW fitted it to resolve some problems with cold idle and WOT IIRC.

I had a code 1215 (AFM) on mine - found that connector was holding water & shorting the AFM pins.  Car has been running very well since I pulled it.

I always wondered what that thing was there for.  I pulled it 7 years ago when i bought the car; I think it's still rolling around in the boot somewhere.

Thanks for the responses. I'll continue to leave it out. It doesn't seem needed in our case either.

anyone wanna get rid of theirs I could use it to test my M42.
