I've just installed an m42 into my e21 320is and am wonder how to determine which ignition wires from the wiring harness correspond to the correct cylinders. I can't seem to find anything about which is which and feel like there is some random thing I'm overlooking. Thanks for any help!

My e30 m42 doesn't have different colors on the wiring harness. If you pulled the wiring from an e36 it'll have color coded wires, same DME pins. There's a helpful post here (http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1622).
Trace the black wires from the DME plug:
Coil #1: 25
Coil #2: 52
Coil #3: 24
Coil #4: 51

It's the e30 harness, although i have an e36 one laying around. Thanks a lot for the info!
