Title: 93 3181 timing chain?

I took my 93 318i to the dealer for service and the mechanic said it sounds like a diesel. He said to put a heavy oil in it? This morning when starting I heard a loud pop and the it would not start, seams like all is working. Sounds like the timing chain, any answers? oil level is fine no leaks.
