So, I have a 93 318i, which is an e36, right? Well, on the driver door frame, where the vin and other vehicle information is, it says 318i-4(M42). Does that mean its got an M42?
I don't really know much about cars and all, so I'm not sure.
-
you've got an M42 ...its a little different than the M42 in our E30 BMWs, but hey, welcome anyway!
-
Whats different between my m42 and yalls m42's?
-
off the top of my head, mostly accessory items: ignition coil pack, intake manifold, serpentine belt (for alternator, p/s pump, a/c), knock sensors, and uh, some slight differences in the fuel rail.
-
Displacement for the M42B18 was 1.8 L (1796 cc). E30 318iS and early E36 318iS/318ti (prior to 1992) models were fitted with versions producing 101 kW (136 hp) and 172 N·m (127 ft·lbf), later, change in the overhead cam design helped to achieve 106 kW (140 hp) and 175 N·m (129 ft·lbf) coping with the increased weight of the E36 models. The engine uses Bosch M1.7 fuel injection.
Thats what wikipedia says, so basically my engine has little bit more power, but my car weighs more?

ah well, makes sense. So does anyone else on the boards have an e36, or am i going to stick out like a sore thumb in picture threads?

We don't discriminate, but you will stick out for the time being as we are still a rather small group/forum.
Welcome

You know when you watch a little league game, and there's always like, one absolutely gigantic kid ...that will be you.
kidding! :)
hey, welcome aboard... if you dig it, hang out for awhile.
You can write our 5-lug DIY swap.
-
Which right now is hungover from a 1 week Vegas trip. :p But, the way I see this board growing you will be the the first in a long line of E36 M42s. Who knows, you might become their leader, LOL. Welcome to the group.
-
you seem a little confused, but welcome. m42 is the engine designation, and your car is an e36. we all have the e30, and the m42 engine was only in the e30 chassis for the 1991 model year, in the 318/318is. good luck modifying/fixing your car and enjoy the club. a great site for your needs would be http://www.bimmerforums.com , i think most of us here started on that site, and i frequent it the most, as it has info for every model out there and TONS of people to give advice and support. for m42 related stuff, check in here and hang out!

Thanks for the welcome guys :)

I like that analogy, I was always the smallest out on the field :p

Yeah, just a bit. I'm new to the car scene, so I figured since I'll be taking this thing with me to college in a year, I might as well learn as much as I can about it.
-
glad to hear that your eager to learn! I'm sure all of us here will be happy to assist you with any problems you may encounter....well at least those of us that will know how to answer your question!
-
no problems really, though there is a sound when the car starts that i dont think it should make, i'll record it on my phone (this things damn useful!) within the next few days.

i have a 95 E36 M42....the last year before they went to the M44....i'm pretty good with the general knowledge and some of the advanced stuff..... We're all workin out ok here. The basic mechanics of our motors are the same, so if something's broken with yours odds are the guys here can walk you through it.
again, Welcome!
-
Haha, I stick out even more, considering I have the M44. Cool that there's another hangout for the 4-banger enthusiasts now, since 318ti.org is a little specialized.
-
and your in St Pete Too... i used to live in Dunedin right around the corner from you. Moved myself down to naples though..... Nice to see the 318's have a home!
