Looks pretty neat!  I'm kind of digging the color combo with the black (suede?) and the checkered fabric, maybe you should fabricate a shift and e-brake boot to match to fabric?  (Maybe send some fabric to mattb to make some?)  Just a thought.

I'm near to doing my seats too.  They're not horrible, but the drivers seat is slowly coming apart on the outside bolster.  I'd like to do an M3 vader style if i can (you know the little coloured stripes) only on an e30 sport seat.

Mine are still in good shape, if I had to do it I'd dump the piping and go for a nice alcantra like yours.  That plaid does a nice job pulling it all together.  Does it look that bold in real life, or is the camera emphasizing the black too much?

Thanks for the comments guys the camera is making it stand out a bit more than normal

I was thinking of doing the shift and break boot but I don't think its the right sort of material to do it with

I think it rocks!  I think I'm going to redo mine with some junk yard material that I just got:

I don't think I'll be able to find that material again, so I'm still debating as I'll be matching it to this back seat which will obviously be recovered:

My only concern is that the only place on the car that will have the cool looking material will be the centers of the front seats; no door cards (they came from a touring 4 door), and no back seat.

Do you think it will look silly to have the back seat totally black and the front seats in the above material?

where did you get the material? or did you make it yourself? i want to do my seats but i don't have any experience in upholstery.

Junk yard in Germany where I'm living for a couple years.  I'm trying to compile all the cool parts I can while here.  My next big score will hopefully be some 15" Hartge (I think) wheels.

In terms of doing your own, unless you have good sewing machine skills- as well as said sewing machine- I'd just get a kit from someone like The Artisan from over on E30tech.  I think his kit for a microfiber front and rear is about $600.  You strip and recover the seat yourself.  I've looked very loosely into getting it done for my past (leather) E30s and it was going to be around $600 a seat, so I think this was a decent deal.  Plus, if I can use this fabric, then it will be an even bigger savings.

Which brings me to another question.  I don't plan on paying the entirely ridiculous amount for new heated seat elements (my junk yard score ones were bad) and was just going to get some aftermarket ones.  Would the aftermarket ones be able to make it through the padding as well as the material?  The OEM elements- this is for a vertically stitched setup- goes in between the padding and the material, so I'm wondering on effectiveness of the heaters.

And all of these metal wire bits have to go back in to hold all the cloth in place

Quick note to Carlos and longtallsally:
Can either of you get your hands on a left shoulder bolster in gray cloth?
I've attached a photo of the actual seat, and I only need the fabric, not the
foam.

Sorry, I've not seen that at the the yard I've been to.  Also, the cars that did have the Recaros have really torn bolsters worse than yours.  I'm actually going to be assembling mine from 2 passenger seats from different cars.

You will need some hog ring pliers and hog rings  to put that cover on. You can get a set for under $30. I'd get the angle pliers. it will help in tight spots.

I reused my old hog rings and just a normal set of long nose pliers
