Hello folks, i just recently joined the M42 Club because i think this one of the best, maybe the best, resource for our beloved E30 M42b18.
I'll shall give you guys a little introduction of myself and my BMW.
My name is Dennis, 22 years old, and i come from the Netherlands (Europe) and about 8 months ago i bought my first BMW. Before the BMW i owned a Volvo 440 1.8i.
A very nice and luxery car to drive but the looks are a little bit boring and the power was also way below my desires.
When the distribution belt suddenly broke and the valves were bend it was time for another car.
My first interest went out for an E34 2.5 but because of its weight and price i decided to look for a smaller BMW wich leads me to the E30. Sure no regrets of that!
At first i wanted a 2.5Ltr but when i heard and read some story's of the 318iS i was sold. I saw one about 50 Km's from my home and i went lookin and it was love at first site... The car had some nice options like , electric windows and mirrors , leather sport interior, a sunroof, fog lights, and a nice M-Technic rear spoiler.
The engine was also nice and smooth, no weird noises and so on.
The engine had 233.000 Km on it but as far as i could see it was maintained wel and with te proper oil.(Valvoline10w40)
I know that because i have all the financials of the car from 2 years back till now.
I went for a little testdrive and i when this little engine was warm i was very suprised by its power, i never expected a 1800cc motor that quick!
The only problem i noticed was a clunking sound from the back. I thougt this were worn subframe rubbers wich later turned out to be a broken differential mount on the subframe.
1 mount was completely torn off a couple of months later.
My driving style and multiple times lifting the car under the differential did not helped this situation of course...
I fixed that now and replaced the whole subframe and rubbers a couple a months ago.
Here's a list of what i've done to my car and then i'll shut up and post show some pictures of the car! ;)
The first months
- Replaced the old oil with new Castrol magnatec 10W40
- replaced all the hoses under the intake manifold + Big air hose.
- New thermostat and fresh cooling fluid.
- cleaned the injectors with a ultrasonic device.
- Cleaned the engine bay , scrubbed the whole thng a long time with sanding paper. Not recommended but the result is pretty.
- Some rust repair under the trunk lid and battery box inside the engine.
Recently
- Buyed a secondhand subframe and painted the whole thing+the carrier arms
- Installed new subframe and carrier arms rubbers.
- Fresh differential fluid(75W90) and new rubber bushing.
- Rubbers and links for the stabilizor bar at the rear. (also painted that)
- Handbrake cables and shoes etc.
- new brake fluid, DOT4
- Reinforced top mounts for the rear shocks.
- Guibo and driveshaft center bearing.
- Transmission mounts and also fresh transmission fluid (75W90)
- Rubbers and supports for the complete exhaust system.
- Painted the rear of the car against rocks and moisture.
- Sprayed the wheel (housings?) with anti-rock hit.
I may have forgotten something but it gives you an idea how far the love for this car goes.
Excuse my English at some times, i'm better at reading it than writing it ;)
Time for some exposure...

On the photo you can clearily see the color difference at the right front panel and the door. In real life this is less noticeable.
