Maybe it's just me, but that seems hard to justify when you can find entire engines for less than $400.  I bought another engine this month when the timing chain in my '91 slipped and the intake valves bent.  I've now got a damaged head and serviceable bottom end sitting in my garage.  Not sure what to do with it…  Once you repair the head and timing chain components (chain, sprockets, etc.) you're into it for a grand, easy.

Yeah, they're expensive.  I'm in the middle of gasket overhaul on my M42, and the money sure went fast on my refresh.  I can't imagine cam gears/chain/rails/gaskets, etc. would run.  I still have to put rod bearings/bolts/nuts into the damn thing.  I hope it runs when I'm done!!!!

$400 sounds like a fair price for a rebuilt head.

$400 motors often need a timing rebuild as well.  I found a good used set of cam sprockets and rails when I did my timing rebuild... but those don't pop up very often.
