Title: figuring out engine production date

So i have a 92 318is, the previous owner had different m42 place in. So how would you figure out the production date on this engine?...Should i look for a casting number on the block?

Yes, it will look like a round stamp with two numbers in it 92, 93, 94 or whatever year it is. If I remember correctly it is on the back of the engine
