Title: M20 Flywheel Swap Starter issue
Post by: seph429 on April 02, 2010, 07:21:13 PM
I'm using a M20 starter, the 3 post kind. I got it hooked up and went to turn the key and nothing but a loud click.

So i pulled the starter off and tested it with a battery and it worked fine. One post made it come out and spin slowly, while the other post made it spin very fast. So i hooked it up to the car and had my friend turn the key while i watched the pinion come out.

The pinion comes out and spins but VERY slowly. Its like the post that makes it spin fast isnt getting power, but i checked it with a voltmeter and both sides are getting +12v

Would anyone have an idea of where to start to look for the problem? I really want to get the car running and this is (hopefully) the only thing holding me back.

Thanks.

Start with cleaning the connectors that hook directly to the starter. That appears to be the only variable (the connectors) as it worked fine when you when straight to a battery. Also inspect the wires to make sure one isn't cracked, binding or grounding out.
