Title: tape for engine compartment

Hey,

I need to touch up some spots on the electric harnesses under the hood.  In light of the elevated temperatures a running engine may create, I'm not sure what tape to use.  The existing tape looks like electrical tape, but it appears to be made with fabric rather than vinyl.  Generic formulations and brand-name product suggestions appreciated.  Thanks!

This is what we use on the race car.  It's pretty incredible and will do exactly what you want.  Heat and fuel resistant, water and air tight, insulating, self adhesive.

The OEM stuff is called friction tape or fabric tape.  I found cheap (~$3) rolls at Pep Boys and also Lowes' electrical dept, of all place.  I vastly prefer it to electrical tape as it only sticks to itself and doesn't get slimy with cheap adhesive after a week.

While I'm on tape...avoid duct tape too, use aluminum instead.  It's more expensive and not as flexible, but it really seals things like intakes, duct work, insulboard, etc.  Great for quick bodywork too, backing up bondo.

That rescue tape looks good too...silicone is great stuff.
