Does anyone know how many E30 318is were built and how many are left in the world.
I know its a strange question but something I have been thinking for a long time

The really rare model is the 4 door M42 powered 318i. It was only sold in the US for 1 year. Only 2000 produced.

I would guess over the years if you average it out, 75 cars have been destroyed, parted, crushed, whichever. So if you find the total, subtract about 1500.

318i FTW!! It's a budget model though, mine was stripped except for the crank sunroof, fogs & outdoor temp display.

A quote from an advert on PistonHeads.com:
"In total, 41,234 318iS's were made which means that out of the full 2.2 million E30's, 1.86% of them were 318iS's."

Here's one! IDK if it's a member or not. Overheated motor but it's only $750:

Maybe we could run an owners registry, but it'd be impossible to get accurate info unless you had security clearance to run DMV records or access BMWs customer service computers...

According to the auto industry
Approximately 5.1% of cars are scrapped each year. Let's round this to 5% to make it easier. Rounded to 5%, this works out to about 40% of the vehicles have been lost by the 10 year mark. By the 20 year mark, you are down 60% of all produced.
Given a total worldwide production of 130k e30's and a period of 20 years.
By year 10, we are down to 80k
By year 20 we are down to about 50k
So the question is, how many made it to the U.S. and how many were M42 e30's.
In 90 and 91, only 60,500 e30's were imported according to StrictlyEta.
Lets assume half (30,000) are of the m42 variety.
By year 10 we have lost 12,000, Leaving just 18,000.
By Year 20 we have lost 18,000, leaving just 12,000.
Remember, I rounded DOWN the number scrapped, so those numbers are HIGH. It is probably closer to 11k. Divide that amongst the models and you get a pretty rare car. And we wonder why there is little for these cars.
Interesting note, every 325 model had more produced than the entire e30 m42 range.

I watch Craig's List pretty regularly here in the Bay Area, & I can tell you for every one 318i/is I see for sale there are at least 10 89-91 325s for sale. It would be very interesting to see the break-down on how many E30s were produced in each model, & even better to break the 318 models down by options (since there were so few available). I always wonder how many 91 318i 4-doors there are out there with factory LSD & no sunroof, like mine :D

I found a little more info, don't know if it's accurate:
http://www.e38.org/BMWProductionData.pdf
According to these numbers, 52033 e30 M42s were built. The production numbers on the 318i include the M10 version...but we can take the 318iS away from the M42 total production...leaving 10799 M42 sedans & convertibles.
