On an E36 is it normal that left half of the tank is empty and the right half (the one with the pump) is full up to top?
Forgot to mention: currently there are about 25-30 liters but all of the gas is on the right side.

Come on, nobody opened the fuel tank before?

The pass through hose must be plugged, maybe th e vent.

A picture or realoem link please?

My e30/m42 has a small hose connecting the two sides of the tank. Not sure of the e36 setup. 25-30 liters is far too little gas...I'd agree with Lizard that it's a plugged hose. It looks like yours run across the top of the tank from the sender housing to the pump housing. Sorry to be so vague:

Thanks for the input.
I have the following setup on my car:

The return from fuel rail is in the right (on the realoem picture, small hose) left side on the car - the one that is empty on my car. The big hose links the 2 sides of the tank. I think that if the big hose would be plugged then all the fuel would remain in the left side of the tank but that's not the case, I have the other side full with gas.
