Hey am brand new to the bmw world, this is my first 318is its a 93 and am a little particular about it, its fun as hell and it pulls sometimes hard then most 6 cylinders i previously own like my 95 maxima which was a 5 speed and pull harder in 5th gear while doin 80 and the rpms are up in 4 to 5 k so that was a big wow factor to me but anyways...i want to know a good yet simple build for my m46 (this is a d.d and street raceing vehicle) so i would like to know how much work would have to be put into these engine to have a ok or decent amount of power (in the 150 to 200 whp) and as for clutch/flywheel combos whats a good one (all same reason). Ok so on a side note are these engine well the single vanos system the same as the ex model civic with the vtec in the intake system? Oh! and one more thing has anyone ever thought of or ponder of utilizing the double vanos on a 4 cylinder like the honda and there dohc vtec..just a ponder please the flame me would you hit a kid for asking questions?:(

Im kinda confused, but I think you want more power....
Chip, e-fan, loose the power steering and maybe an exhaust.
Most important thing is make sure the car is running right. Check the plugs, air filter, fuel filter, fluids etc....
Heres some good links to read

Wow for some reason I always seem to confuse people when I type, but thxs for the other sites. My real quest is a build up to an adequate amount of power like 160 to 200 considering how light the car is am looking for poweradder that you guys can give me like piston and pistion size what type of camsshafts and why that type and what modds would get me to that power range.and again guys am just wounderin has anyone though of uesing double vanos on our 4 cyclinders am mainly thinking of the same concept of the si vtec engine and again..please don't flame me for my ignorance

If it's of any consolation, I understood what you were saying in your first post...but I have no insight as to how to acheive 200 hp. Good luck.

You're probably in the market for an M50 swap. I'd go for the later aluminum block M50TU2. You could easily get 250 out of that motor with a chip, lightened flywheel and exhaust mods. It wouldn't be that cheap, but it'd go like a scalded cat. That engine has double-VANOS too, BMW's VTEC.
Later engines like the N52 are even lighter...that's my eventual plan right there...

Sounds good so how do I get my hands on a m50 engine this sounds like a good I deal seeing that a lot of sights I been to don't really promote the upbring of the m42 engines and its kinda depressin it feels like when I have my 2.2 ohv cavalier and the people of that fourm said your better to get the 2.4 quad 4 engine don't get me wrong the engine I the 318is is fun but that's it man and we all want that reliable power for that everyday strip race and as it seems a lot of companys don't really endorse our engines so I guess the M50 engine is the best ideal so with that said again were can I find one and how much do they cost.but on a side note no onw seem to answer my question as to why we can't utilize the double vanos system on our four cyclinders like hondas si vtecs if no one understands why not investegate huh? Can't we studie hondas vtec and then studie our own vanos system to see what's in common..and last question...(Sry I asks tons of questions) is our engines built for high rpms cause I noticed at around 80mph my rpms are around 3.5 to 4k and don't know if that's normal or what but when I accelerate around them rpms the car acclerates pretty strong is it cause how high the rpms are or is it the single vanos system now...am done sry about the rant
