Title: my M42 dyno chart
Post by: fabe on December 28, 2009, 09:09:46 PM
Went for a dyno a couple of days back..

Here's the chart:

I have Perfect Power SMT6 installed and tuned before. The last dyno run I went for was in 2005.
For this latest run, I didn't manage to retune the fuel maps due to faulty cable.. Few things have went in since the last run 4 years ago..
1- Nology plug cables
2- custommade RHD exhaust extractor
3- straight-flow exhaust

2 things I noticed in the chart
1- there's a dip in torque between 3,000-3,800 rpm. And based on the corresponding A/F ratio,  the AFR was at the 'so-called' ideal AFR of 13. (Not sure how accurate is the CO probe). If the CO probe is accurate, then the conclusion would be the engine likes it slightly lean..

2- sharp dip at about 4,900rpm. This I believe is due to the opening of the DISA valve. Sudden rush of intake air causing the lean A/F mixture..

Anything to improve on based on this dyno chart?

Am not sure how accurate is the Dynojet but the figures are slightly higher than a E36 320i M50B20 done on the same day.

Am using a E36 M42 in an E30, engine internals untouched.
This is the list of bolt-on mods/upgrades:

- lightened M40 single mass flywheel (7.6kg)
- open pod air filter
- Nology plug cables.
- custom mandrel bent RHD extractor (http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9299&highlight=)
- Perfect Power SMT6 piggy-back ECU.

Still running fan clutch and the restrictive AFM and was running RON95 fuel instead of the higher octane RON97 fuel...

oh btw, this is a newer engine with presumably lower mileage. Can't tell since the engine was bought used (scrapped and imported from Japan). Looking at the engine condition, it looked like a low miler which is usually the case when it's scrapped in Japan.

Did another dyno run today...

BLUE - last run in Dec 09
RED - Today's run

Mod since the last dyno was tweaking the exhaust... butt dyno felt improvement after the tweak. And the chart seem to show torque improvement...
however, peak power was lower by 1+HP..

on another hand, is it possible to have 17Nm improvement without significant increase in HP.. Or the Dynojet needed a recalibration??
