Post by: Jorgeconrico on December 11, 2009, 11:20:24 AM

They're neat cars.  I never owned one...I heard beware of the front end shimmy, rust and the antique FI system.  It's an e30 without the bells and whistles...price is right.  I'd do it.

The M10 lasts forever too.

The only thing is that the car hasn't been started in 10 years so yea.....And the back is rusted to hell but nothing some bondo cant fix. The seller says it wont start and maybe the fuel pump is at fault. The car only has 110,000k miles. I dunno what to do.

Just hesitant to buy a car that doesn't start ,and hasn't been started in 10 years. Also found out it has a clean title, but no paperwork.

I want a hennarot 320i so bad that if i had time I'd drive out there and buy it out from under you.

Buy it before I change my mind or figure out how to get it to Minneapolis.

Hey if you want just use starting fluid it should fire up if the electrical side is good. If it starts then be prepared to do a lot of Labor.  Trouble Shooting.  Pre Maint' stuff -Water pump - Thermostat - Fuel Pump & Related - Brake / Clutch Master & Wheel Cylinders and or Replacement - ''Hoses'' - Timing Components - All Fluid Changes - Suspension?.  GL

Thats the problem. I just got my 318 in order and still have things I want to do, suspension etc...

I also just graduated and this would be my third car so $$ obviously comes into play here.

I didn't know that the rust was that bad.  I'd skip it, you already have too many.  It's not like the e21 will suddenly become a collector car...they're the bastard child between the '02 and the e30.  They never get any love.  There's an unloved one over my way for $600.  It's been sitting on CL for over a month...non-running & gunmetal metallic.  They'd probably jump at an offer.

This one has the full sport package though - Recaros, nice BBS & leather wheel.  Might have Bilsteins under it too...and the red is really nice.  Tempting.  I'd bet the fuel pump is dead...and they're expensive.  They're pretty simple cars.

Have you ever noticed that pricing for e21s is largely determined by their color (or lack therof)?

No, I haven't noticed that. The only reason this car struck my eye was the color and the fact that I rode in one everyday when I was a kid. I'm still on the fence, but the more I think the less I want it, unless the guy lowers the price.

On third thought that rust could be fairly trivial.  I'll bet there's a lot of it we can't see but the rear towers and trunk seem pretty solid.  The front wings were a problem area too, IIRC.  That rear facia is a common place for rust and not that significant until it gets down into the bumper mounts.

I grew up in a '74 2002 my Dad bought new.  So many people asked us if it was a VW...silly.  Great car, still my Dad's favorite.

Despite that, the 320i is like three times the car, and the e30 is even better.  Rust was such a problem then...the '02 unfortunately rusted out quickly from a few fender benders despite (or because of) Ziebart-ing and we traded it in on an '81 VW Rabbit.  They were both great cars, I'm always tempted by 2002's and mint green VWs.

I wonder at all the huge cars I see driving around these days...those wee little cars seemed just right at the time...and still seem that way to me today.

Your last sentence sums up why I want the car.

My sister just sold her restored 83 Rabbit...She cried, I laughed..good times. It was a sweet little car but talk about bare bones, jesus I don't even think that thing had heat. LOL

No he wouldn't move on the price. I'm hoping to find another, but thats unlikely. I just didn't think it was worth that much and it had a lot more rust than he stated.
