Title: Fuel Tank Size

Alright, I could have SWORN I read somewhere the tank size on the 318is was somewhere around 12 gallons but I found two sites saying its 14.5 gallons..can anyone confirm this?

If the tank really does hold 14.5 gallons my fuel guage is way off, because the one time I filled it up when the guage was pegged on empty I put in 11.8 gallons or so.  I need to pick up an O2 sensor also, I think my mileage has been pretty crappy lately.  But I'm sure the 100*+ AZ heat with the AC cranked all the time doesn't help any.  I cant wait until October when I can drive around with the windows down in comfort.

Haha..that might explain why it seems like my fuel guage seems to go down too fast because it's not accurate.  I still plan on buying a new O2 Sensor though..hopefully it will improve my mileage.

I get the same thing. Tank is supposed to be 55 liters but when I hold till the light's been on for a while, the max I put in is 45 liters.....

Yeah.  I want to start filling up before I drop below 1/3 of a tank now, just so I dont feel like I'm always sitting on E and it's nice to see half a tank or more when you look down :cool:  I'm not going to drive around with it on Empty either because I guarentee you the fuel guage will actually work when I try that and I'll run out of gas 200 miles away from human life :D

I bought a new 63 -litre tank off eBay. Anyone have any idea whether it would fit and how hard is fitting it.  How many hours would a workshop charge me?

sheepdog (our board's sysadmin) has done the fuel tank... didn't sound like a load of fun...

It's not that bad or hard to replace the fuel tank. It's best done while doing d.shaft or clutch work. Why? Well, you have to drop the exhaust and d.shaft. I replaced all the rubber fuel lines on my old m42 while doing the clutch as the moment was one I had to take full advantage of. In order to replace the fuel feed and return lines on the gas tank, I had to drop it.
Be very careful when dropping the tank! Make sure not to dent it while you're at it as well. IIRC we can use any e30 gas tank, i.e. small and large capacity on our cars. The only difference is the volume and in our cars it really doesn't matter much except when u calculate ur MPG.

its not a hard job, just time consuming.  I wouldn't do it unless you had a lift though.  Replace everything you can while its out, like ss brake lines and subframe bushings etc.
