Title: M42 bmw engine running problem.
Post by: Avtovaz on November 30, 2009, 02:54:58 PM
See if anyone on here can help me please with a runing problem with my bmw!

Bit of a story.

I bought a 1800 16v motor from a guy in london, he told me to replace the injector seels when i put the motor to my compact. This motor was out of a L reg compact ti.

So i put the motor in, changed the injector seals, and went to start it up.

... After i had put the fire out, [:^(] i found that i had put the fuel rail back on wrong, and had bent the fuel rail. So I took the one off my 1600 single cam bmw motor and fitted that.

The car ran after a tow, ran nice above 3,000 revs, but would not idle and would not drive below those revs.

On inspection i found out that the 1600 fuel rail was much taller than the 1800 one, it was holding part of the inlet manifold up, so i tried to mod it to fit, but it never worked right.

I then bought a 1800 fuel rail new from bmw, this is much lower and more compact design. Now i have fitted this and expected the car to go off the key, but no! It again just turns over and wont start unless you give it a tow.

Now when it runs, its missfiring randomly, not much power, will idle but not very well, the cat started to smell, so i turned it off. I took the plugs out and they are all very sooty and very black.

I have been told that i should have a look at the temp senders on the block, there is two multiplugs, i think i have them the right way about as the temp gauge works. I havnt yet tried a new temp sensor for the brain.

Tomorrow i will try a new sensor, but after that i have no idea, could you please give me some ideas of what i can check and what could cause this missfiring.

thanks!

After I put the fire out...

oh dear.

Fuel pressure is strong?  Is the new rail the same inner diameter?

I'd get a rail & manifold from a breaker & install some overhauled injectors.  I don't recall what the hot setup is over your way, was it Opel or SAAB 155 injectors?  I'd make sure you have a FPR that's working too....BMW also sells both 3 and 3.5 bar varieties for different engines.  I wouldn't mix & match.  If the manifold didn't fit I'm wondering if it cracked an injector or pinched the high pressure fuel line.

Sounds like you're having a hell of a time.  I've been there - just think, it's always darkest right before the engine fire.

Just kidding...play safe, drive hard.
