Hi long time listener first time caller here
has anyone strapped a turbo onto their m42 on here? got any writes ups/lists etc?
heres a couple of pics of a local iS turbo, putting out around 350hp (hearsay, but i know who worked on it and $$ gone into it so i don't have any disbelief)
i'm not sure what engine work he has done, but i know its motec.
when turbo, what internals need changing? i imagine just pistons, to change the high compression? does anyone have any pictures of stock vs turbo iS pistons?
thanks for any answers and info, im a bit of a m42 n00b being a m20 man too!
-
welcome!! that is one sweet-looking snail!
-
mine will be on REALLY soon now, I am going back to college in less than a week and a half and it has to be on by then. Write-up will follow
-
oooooooo aaaahhhhh do you have any more pics?
-
nope sorry..thats all i go....tis nice though!
-
what!! that looks like a really well setup turbo. I love how the coilpack was mounted as well!
-
The sticker on the strut tower in the last picture may as well say "Ouch... my ass"
I'll be all over the turbo thing just as soon as I recoop financially from making the car drivable and safe. Then once my car is done I'll be building the parts for other people ;)

Sign me up!!! Can you use a thicker head gasket to lower the comp?

timing chain not belt ;) idk how much movin you can do w/ that
-
Ooops! Never thought of that!
-
thats fine, you can lower it a ton of other ways though.
shave your pistons, new pistons, bore, stroke, ...the list goes forever
-
Chain works just like the belt.... that's why you have the indexing squares on the back of the cams and adjustable cam gears. The tensioner will take the slack just like before and all will be well. You could STACK thicker headgaskets and still get away with it fine.
And more bore with the same piston CC will make compression higher.
I'm planning on a thicker M44 gasket. Stacking a couple MLS gaskets would be nice but Cometic gets a ton for those things.

There is alot of room with the tensioner. ;)
-
Aha! So that's what the slots in the cam gears are there for - i.e. adjusting the relationship between the crank gear at TDC and the cam gears to compensate for variations in head gasket, deck height, etc.

So how do you do it when you are reassembling the engine? Does Bentley cover this?
I try to learn something new every day, I'm going to bed now!

lol cool, I didn't know but I figured it was something to take into account
-
Just set up the chain according to the Bentley. Locking the cams and crank in place puts everything where it's supposed to be regardless of the head even being on the block, loosen the cam gear bolts and put the tensioner piston in to take the slack out of the chain, tighten down the bolts, remove the lock tools and you're done. Your cams are timed as factory and your headgasket is thicker.

Turbo
-
um...
WOW. thats purty...

Here is a photo of 8:1 pistons from my m42
Also a photo of my m42 turbo, its currently gettin dynoed and i should be getting it back tomorrow
I will probably do a write up over my uni break holidays, ive been working on this project since december last year.

well dang, care to share any info? What manifold are you using? Thats the thing holding me back at the moment :(
-
Turbo setup looks like a perfect contender for the Coil-On-Plug conversion. No need to sweat the coil pack location or plug wires.
-
are those e36 m3 coil on plugs?

Fits E39 525, 530; all E46; all X5; all E60; E63, E64 645Ci; E65, E66 745, 760; all X3, and MZ3 3.2 with Bremi ignition coils

is that link to a used part?
how much do these usually go for?

Most common application is E46 1998-2001 328i. Also a ton of other models.
$43 for the coil and $5 for the extension from FAP99.com.

And the mount plate from bmwman91.

general info:
Pistons: 8:1 JE Pistons from top-end performance
injectors: 570cc
turbo: T2871R
ignition coils: Bosch (not sure exactly)
engine management: Wolf3d Ver4
head gasket: Cometic
exhaust: Custom made manifold, 3 inch dump pipe, high flow cat, resenator, muffler
intercooler: From lancer evo (dont know which one)
fuel: Walbro intank pump, rising rate pressure reg
Clutch: Custom made clutch
also have boost guage inside
soon to be fitted an gredy electronic boost controller
The manifold was custom made for me and cost me about 800-1000 Australian dollars
im happy to answer any questions
-
yeah I may shoot some questions your way later, do you have AIM? mine is asubimmer lol
-
No i dont have AIM, is that a messaging program? I have MSN...
-
yeah basically like MSN, I'll PM you sometime then
-
Where are you getting your pressurized oil from to supply the turbo?
-
well, now im semi seriously thinking about buying this...around 12k NZ$$ which is probably 8.5k US..good buy? makes 180rwkw, so around the 280hp mark (i thought 350 was a little high!)
now has an m20 gearbox (bolt pattern the same, just cut and rotated the bellhousing) after it lunched the m42 one.
totally convinced about 4 cylinders after driving my car (m325i), my mums 318 and a mates M30 335i. so its either this or importing an m3...leaning towards the m3 as they rock, but i could maybe do a partial swap with my car for this.
hmm ideas!

Hey do those coils require a new engine menegement ?

Hey do those coils require a new engine menegement ?
No, they plug into the existing coil leads.
-
Does anyone know where bmwman's original sheet metal CAD drawing could be found? I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to make one of the plates if I had a nice template. Thanks guys.

am buying this car after i sell mine...anyone else on here have much experience with turbos and thoughts on how they drive? i have my own, but would be interested in others opinions
also, anyone track their M42 turbo?

You'll be hard pressed to find many users with M42 turbos, they're few and far between. I've seen maybe 3 posters on various BMW boards with M42 turbos. There's a few other pictures of M42 turbo setup floating around, but I don't know who they belong to.
I've looked into turbo'ing my M42, but engine management and a manifold have been the biggest problems.

I have an M42 turbo that is destined for the track, but it's all the little things that kept it in the garage so far. It was a much bigger project than I was expecting, and I've done something similar before. Had I started with a 318 instead of a 325 it would have been easier. The car runs and there is a You Tube link around here as well as some pics.
-
Where are you getting your pressurized oil from to supply the turbo?
-
I added a VPD oil cooler and cap which features a port for pressurized oil supply.
-
Hey do those coils require a new engine menegement ?
What wiring mods do I need to do to get those working properly because its a simple ingenius idea?
-
none, you just need the coil (the rubber piece that goes onto the coils) and the custom made flat bar that allows the coil packs to be bolted down.

Well, after a long story I ended up buying this car (for a 2nd time). So its all mine! Although, I am in the UK and the car is in NZ...so its gonna be a while. But will have something to look forward to

We sell the COP kits.
We have a new batch of COP kits available.
The kits include top grade hardware (no home improvement store stuff).
$185 w/coils (shipped in the US)
Coils are used but tested prior to shipping. One coil is modified to fit in Cylinder 1.
$80 w/o coils (shipped in the US)

The car is currently in running trim as a dedicated club racing car. Here is a link to more info.
